3 killed in west PHX plane crash.

Definitely a tough week for DVT!! I just hope the "It always happens in Three's" skips DVT!! It has been pretty solemn around Pan-Am, so we know how the Westwind'ers must feel. Our prayers go out to all the families involved.

[/ QUOTE ]are they supposed to practice stalls in a twin? maybe they couldn't get the engines back on? Do they have "little black boxes" in those planes?

My thoughts are with the families on this terrible day. As a somewhat recent flight instructor out of AZ I always hate to to hear about these types of accidents especially from the flight training facilities that are so close to what was "home" for me for two years. I used to instruct in the Seminoles and its hard to speculate as to what happened. Its a great training aircraft with decent engine-inop handling characteristics even with 3 people on board. Its forums like these though that really make me appreciate the quality people that visit this site and I know that those families will have tons of support from the aviation community.

Could have been a Vmc demo that got out of hand. Or stalls that got out of hand. Or a stall w/ an engine failure at the same time. That could get you into a spin might fast. And no, I don't believe "they" do spin tests in twins.

1) Yeah you practice stalls in a twin (stalls aren't necessarily dangerous in a twin if done correctly see below).

2) A stall is a function of the wing ceasing to produce lift once the wing has exceeded the critical angle of attack. It's not like a "stall" in a car where the engine cuts out. Engines should have little to do with it unless they were practicing single-engine work and entered a stall in that condition which would pretty much lead directly to a spin. Which is why single-engine stalls are not practiced anymore.

3) No, no little black boxes. And because they were in the practice area I doubt they would have been talking to a tower (Towers DO record the frequency but then it would only have transmissions over freq. not cockpit recordings).

Yeap, I am sure Doug has eevn practiced stalls in the MD-90. When you stall you are stall the wings, not like a car stalling. The engines will be running the whole time. No little black boxes, the wreckage will tell the story.

I am sure Doug will explain it to you when he is back in PHX.

but it does make you want to check all your paperwork and make sure you have everything taken care of (family related stuff) just for "in case" scenario's...

That was the first thing I did....go back and review my life insurance paperwork.....

i go to westwind and yes it was the barney plane that went down. a very very sad day at westwind as it probably still is at Pan Am. 5 people in less than a week at DVT. from what some people believe is that the piper seminole got into a stall-spin and did not recover. all 3 guys will be extremely missed.
