What I find interessting is how "everyone" on J.C. feels as if being a C.F.I. is the end all be all answer to filling in the gap for flight time. What if someone is not cut out to teach, or doesnt have the patience to teach, or cannot make that little of money and "survive", if even for just 6 months. Flight Instucting is not for everyone and I wish someone would have told the first two flight instructors that I had that very same thing!

not sure if this was directly at me personally but since you quoted me I'll respond -

If you take a gander at some of my previous posts on this subject you'll see that I don't think CFI'ing is the only way to go - but neither is dropping 20 g's to barely meet mins when you could spend 3 grand and it'll get you to the same place. I just can't fathom the logic involved here...

I hear ya Slushie, but I think you should take the money from whatever job you get and get your CFI and then just instruct part time. This way you can have someone else pay for your flight time and maybe even still have enough money to rent on your own. I got screwed out at Long Beach and resigned. Now I've pretty much run out of options and money. Tried to get an instructor job, but they wanted some current flight time, which I can understand. But I don't have any money to get that current flight time. So it's the typical catch 22, need the time to get the job, but need a job to get the time. So I'm planning on going back to VA to get back into law enforcement. Already scheduled for testing in a couple weeks. I know this, I'll be making almost $50K a year, full benefits, retirement plan, don't have to worry about getting furloughed or the county going out of business, and I'll be able to make my loan payments and still have money to live on. Not exactly where I was palnning on being right now, but you gotta do what you gotta do. Surprisingly I'm actaully looking forward to going back to VA.

Anyway, good luck whatever you decide to do. Having spent a lot of money on aviation I'd say do what you can to save as much money as possible.

I applaud your willingness to "do what you gotta do". I should probably listen to your advice!

k...i stand corrected i agree its the best way but not the only way to get to the next step.

and the thing is everyone here has gone through the same steps you guys are now.

We've all been 300 hour flight instructors.

I did it by selling my car and buying something cheaper, moving someplace cheaper, working another job, and cutting way back on all my expenses.

The great thing about flight instruction is that most places allow you to set your schedule so if you can make more waiting tables..then wait tables to make ends meat and fly on the side.

However I do think that trying to pay for all your flight time is a sure fire way to not get anywhere fast.

No...it wasnt directed at anyone in particlular. It's just a way for me to vent, from when everyone I talk to at local FBO's, pilot shops, and flying clubs say...."hey, why don't you just flight instruct!"

If I could find a place to get my C.F.I for 3K total (all expenses included), I would!

Hookers too....:sarcasm:

Well the 150 is only when we do airshows. And I guess I was not fully considering how much multi could be "present in cockpit" time.

You shoulda stayed with King!!!!!!

:sarcasm:

Funny thing, or kind of sad...I'm going in to work for them tomorrow! Guy that replaced me is having some family issues so they need someone to fill in. Again, gotta do what I gotta do. Some money is better than no money. Hopefully I'll be back on with the PD by the end of Sept, Oct at the latest.

<--- Former Skymates student and instructor. I'll agree that instructing isn't the only way to go, but there are other jobs out there that don't require you to spend $20K to get time. Keep in mind that just b/c you meet mins doesn't mean you're gonna even get a call. I met the mins at Colgan and then some for three-four months. I constantly updated my resume, but never got a call. It worked out since I got the job at Pinnacle.

Oh yeah, and I'm making about the same amount as a first year FO as a CFI. Don't think that just b/c you finally moved past the CFI job the pay goes through the roof. Your first year anywhere is gonna be rough. The good thing about CFI is that you can fly as much as you want if the student load is there. I flew almost 25-30 days a MONTH at Skymates. It was a running joke there that I never took a day off. :)
