$20,000

I applaud your willingness to "do what you gotta do". I should probably listen to your advice!

Well, after getting screwed for 8 months I decided enough was enough. Won't see $50k at a regional for at least 5 years. Not one that really believes in "everything happens for a reason," but maybe being a police officer is what I should be doing. I think a long break was all I needed from VA...too bad it cost so much.

I'm still waiting for UPS the chime in on the discussion (this one and the fact that I left FSI). Guess he's working. I know he'd tell Slushie to get his CFI.

norfolk was advertising for cops, starting pay $31k/yr...which is about what I made as a first year FO...where you gonna make $50k/yr to start as a cop here?

What I find interessting is how "everyone" on J.C. feels as if being a C.F.I. is the end all be all answer to filling in the gap for flight time. What if someone is not cut out to teach, or doesnt have the patience to teach, or cannot make that little of money and "survive", if even for just 6 months. Flight Instucting is not for everyone and I wish someone would have told the first two flight instructors that I had that very same thing!
I would venture to say that someone without those qualities would probably not make a good crewmember.

Teaching is required at ALL levels. FOs learn from Captains and so on.

There's a difference between that and teaching someone who hasn't seen an airplane before.

This is something that weirds me out about instructing. It seems like every brand-new student is going to look like such a huge mountain to climb. I know, building blocks. But still. Anyway, I'm with you on the discouragement bit. People keep saying it sucks that the days of $300K are over. I don't care about that -- I'll be happy if I can just support myself comfortably! :)

I'm in a similar situation. I'm at 420TT/ 42 M.E. and am trying to figure out what to do next. The local flight school here wants 5K for a C.F.I. and 3K for C.F.II Thats 7K ecluding my M.E.I which believe is around 4K. It's rough for sure! If you lived in Texas I would fly with you!

Long story short, at 420 hours you don't KNOW what to do next!

I believe that no one is a real pilot until after their first month as a CFI.

No one knows who is learning more - the CFI or the student!

You really can't say you "know" something until you try to teach it to someone else.

I was NOT freight dog material. Yet I still made it to the airlines, flew a jet as captain and "retired" with 8800 hrs.

I'll tell you something else, too. I didn't enjoy flying with freight dogs as much as CFIs. Freight dogs were much less likely to care about passenger comfort and much MORE likely to try and penetrate a line of thunderstorms.

Not me. There is no future in flying through thunderstorms. No thank you!

And plus, you never really know you're ready for upgrade until you're able to have a cogent debate with your captain as to why he's going to kill us all.

...and you're right.

...and he admits it.

LOL good point :D

And I still think you're a n00b13 until you hit *at least* 1200 hours because before then, you really don't know what you DON'T know and the circle you associate with thinks you're a god because you already have your commercial...

hahaha.
I remember some of the commercial checkrides that passed when I was working at the flight school...those guys made me think that commercial was really easy ;)

Commercial = Super Dooper Private.

It's a hard pill to swallow, but take it down baby! ;)

I swear I'm gunna stop complaining now.
I just logged 42.5 hours in the course of a week.
That almost beats my yearly average up to that point.
(not to mention it cost just under $11/hour)

For me it was around 2000 hrs before the light bulb went up above, and I realized I was still "low time."

I think as I was rounding 5K, I started to realize that when I thought I was "The Mack Daddy"/"1337" at 2.5K, I was still just a paeon.
