172R/172SP Be Careful And Verify

Re: and by the way

The reason the obstacle clearance speed is lower than Vx is a very simple one.

[/ QUOTE ] It's even simper than that. Published Vx is clean. Obstacle takeoff is usually done with flaps hanging out and/or gear hanging down. In both cases, there is additional drag. Vx, which is based on excess thrust =has to= be different..

Re: and by the way

Thank you, midlifeflyer, for further clarifying what I was trying to say.

Adding flaps changes your airspeeds. It may not be stated outright in the POH that Vx is different with flaps, but there is an EXACT speed to be looking for with those 10 degrees.

And by the way, Vx does vary with altitude (at least the INDICATED airspeed).

I said it in the beginning of this thread, and I'll say it again: READ THE POH. Do not implicitly trust a checklist because it is the one the rental facility/school uses.

VERIFY, VERIFY, VERIFY!

[/ QUOTE ] Both true and indicated Vx increase with altitude. And, it decreases with weight (the published number is for max gross)

Go ahead and warn me to be careful--I need to hear that as a low-time pilot--but you'd do well to change your attitude about the private being a "level," as if it is, by definition, a stage which you need to pass through.
