Planes divert to ACY all the time. It's the only airport outside of the PHL-EWR-LGA-JFK system that can accommodate them. On any given bad weather day or night it's not uncommon to see many aircraft of all different brands sitting there. But ususally, they divert, sit for an hour and leave. That night was different and the wait was much longer.
Well, the last scheduled plane to depart the airport left shortly after this plane arrived. And the last plane scheduled to arrive the airport was at 10:47 PM (the Spirit flight from FLL!). Everything shuts down after those passengers depart the terminal--including the rental car agencies and the shuttle vans (the airport is nine miles inland from the actual shore and this is now high season). So, now there are issues with how many are at the airport: TSA, GA's etc to help with the situation. There are mechanics, but not much else. Also, the gates are taken by Spirit planes scheduled for early AM departures. So, at midnight, it's not so easy.
But, I don't know the particulars in this situation.
