121 cargo ops

Hi all,

I'm looking for an opportunity outside of regional commuter airlines. I'll miss the travel benefits, but I kind of want to do some heavy jet dispatching. Anyone got any contacts, or know of any airlines hiring where I might get some ETOPS experience?

Thanks.

whats your motive here? are you thinking if you have heavy jet experience + etops that you are going to look more attractive to a major? I don't think it really matters to them one way or another. especially looking at the hiring trends at the majors lately. honestly. dispatching a widebody or a crj, doesn't make any difference to me, same stuff, bigger numbers. it all depends on what you want to get out of it. i mean honestly fedex or ups sure, knock yourself out. but i wouldnt be leaving to places like atlas, southern, etc thinking they're gonna be your ticket into a major.

My motivation, I don't really have one. Not thinking particularly long term. Would just like to do some heavy jet dispatching. ETOPS interests me.

Nothing wrong with wanting to do something just to do it or to learn a new aspect of their current career. Their doesn't have to be an underlying motive.

Before the Atlas/Southern merger I would have recommended joining one of them. My opinion the next best thing is National or Omni Air.

Kalitta just hired 2, might get 2 more

they will start 767 - ETOPS Ops this summer
I'm curious why Kalitta calls their dispatchers "Flight Followers". It appears a lot of their business is scheduled 121 service? Flight following to me means no operational control, no fam rides, etc.

They are a 121 Supplemental....non-scheduled.

Omni and Atlas are, in my opinion, among the top of the list in the supplemental airline business. Their dispatchers are treated as dispatchers, are in CASS, and have a great training program. It is true that the heavy jet experience does not matter to the majors, but if you are tired of canned routes in the US and would love the challenge of planning across the North Atlantic, Pacific, flying into combat zones, learning how to build international routes and follow AIP procedures through numerous FIRS, ect, go for it! It was the best decision that I ever made, even if Ill never get to a major. Being at a major is not the end all, be all. It will allow you to send planes to places that most dispatchers at the majors will never send a plane to and the average person will never go to. Interview, and see what you think. If you get an interview, ask to sit with a dispatcher and see their processes.

121 supplemental has operational control delegated from the DO. No fam rides currently is an accurate statement (Kalitta at least).

I know southern is currently looking for 2 people. We operate under flag domestic and supplemental. Get to do fams and have CASS

Oh really? That's cool, I couldn't find a link for it. Seems like an awesome opportunity.

If you're close to an outstation, throw boxes for a cargo carrier in addition to your regional gig and get in the door that way. At purple, a lot of the international DX came from within and also DX at PCL when they were in MEM - and our FAMs for international you can go around the world (I have 3 RTWs, and planning my 4th this year in my training window). I think a year of throwing boxes and you're eligible to transfer once a gig opens up. There is an internal class of 12 that just started in MEM - They are all domestic. If you were to get an interview, make sure its all on the up-and-up between your current regional and the cargo carrier.

Plus, having experience throwing boxes is invaluable on why they do things the way they do. I didnt have that when I got here and I'm still learning on why they do the voodoo they do.

I teach ETOPS here at Purple and it isnt a bad gig. Yes it is Memphis, but if you work for Uncle Fred and with the low cost of living here, you can live not bad here.
