    DCA Diary

Good advice from Doug. Trying to forget about it and move on is easier said then done, but every so often I'll see a perfectly good pilot bust a ride by trying too hard not to fail. I still feel some nervousness whenever I'm doing a stagecheck or checkride. I like to think as positively as...

    Delta Connection Academy

DCA's aircraft are fairly old and not always pretty to look at (although that is changing), but VERY well maintained. Every single write up, no matter how small, is dealt with immediately. After flying nearly 1000 hours in their aircraft, I've suffered nothing more abnormal then one alternator...

    Cross country time on resume

Question for the pros out there: When you put "cross country" flight time on your resume, which definition do you use? It would seem as if putting the "taking off at one place and landing at another" definition instead of the "landing more then 50NM" would make more sense after you've acheived...

    Stop smoking aids?

I tried quitting about 3 times before. The last time I tried (last summer), I used the gum. Worked great for about a week, then it just seemed to wear off and have no effect (and no, I was not just chewing one the entire time!!!). I sneaked a cigarette after a week ("hmmm it's only one....") and...

What is so bad about DCA?

I work in the Broward base. I've been there the entire time of it's operation (worked for 2 years in dispatch before instructing) since Comair/DCA started there in 1999. To date, not one person at the base has failed the CFII checkride. Hope this alleviates some nervousness!

Ride coming up!! Comm prividleges & limits

I second eveything ananoman said. Simply put you cannot provide both the "horse and cart". That, as well as knowing whether your operation falls in the realm of 119.1(e), is the real test of whether or not you are "legal" to operate without a commercial operator certificate.

    Hey Flight Instructors ...

The amount of learning you do as an instructor is immense. I'm not just talking about the "bookwork", but about other incidental types of learning, Such as how to work and get along with people, work as team, being a good PIC..... and the list could go on forever. It's excellent preparation for...

[ QUOTE ] ...an instrument student that's unprepared is absolutly clueless the whole flight. [/ QUOTE ] Aaaah yeah, the unprepared instrument student is the worst. Anyone had questions in flight such as "When can I start descending?" or "Do I have to do the procedure turn?" after being...

    Hey Flight Instructors ...

    United Sells a few Slots

    Plane is IFR Certified....or not?

Easiest place to look (other then in the AFM) is at the big placard thats always supposed to be in the pilots view. I don't know if this placard has a name, but on the cessna's, it's usually just above the pilots. It states the general limitations for that specific aircraft (eg- "Flight into...

The top 5 worst airports Viva la France- NOT!

By far JFK is the worst of them all, with LGA not far behind. I had the misfortune of having to catch a connecting flight there between FLL and DCA. I was shocked at how dilapidated most of the buildings were. The crowning glory of this turd of an airport was the total inexistence of any...

    Checkrides

Yes, most airlines will ask you if you have failed a checkride, how many and to explain it. One failed checkride is no big deal. 2 and they may raise an eyebrow on the interview. But 3 or more and they are going to seriously start doubting if you are going to be able to get through their...

    Non U.S. citizen background check

Hey all Just wondering if anyone knows what the background check involves before getting hired at an airline these days? I've heard all sorts of rumours, and can't seem to find any detailed information on the net. The latest one is that you have to wait 45 days before starting training, and...

Arky, No one guarenteed us anything more then an interview. So far this year, everyone from the Broward satellite base (where i work) who interviewed was hired. Still no guarentee of a job, but surely a good indication that not only are they giving us interviews, but taking us on as well.
