I'm aware of the 10 (or is it 20?) hours of complex time for the commercial certificate, but does the comm checkride have to be done in a complex???

Yes, unless you are already a CMEL and just adding on the CSEL. If you don't want to do the heavy lifting involved with the FAR/AIM checkout the PTS. :D

only certiain tasks need to be done in a complex airplane. Some people do the maneuvers in a non-complex airplane, then do all the landing work in a complex.

So if you have your CMEL you dont have do do your CSEL add in a complex?
