Coming in With a PPL..

Hmm well this is wonderful...I spent the last three ish weeks planning out my future, and now it's all up in the air.

What to do now?!...do any other universities honor previous ratings, or is it "come here and do it our way (and pay us too)??"

It's going to be "come here and do it our way" no matter where you go. Do NOT go to UND with your instrument rating. You will waste so much money if you do... I mean sooo much money. Plan on throwing away at least 15 grand doing 112, 221, and 222, then plan on wasting another 20 grand on bad academic classes. Go to a non flying school. I know flight colleges look great on paper, I was so excited to go to UND, but left so disappointed. Go get a degree in anything you WANT to do. It really doesn't matter. Realisticly the "backup" degree won't matter in 10 years. Nobody will care whether you have a degree in accounting or a degree in philosophy.

I still have a year of high school left, but would like to get the PPL this summer. Would I be better off to wait then? I live in Ohio (30 min from CLE). Are the out of state tuition increases going to be more than it's worth?

Simply put, I think that going into UND with a PPL is bad. If you go in without a PPL, you probably won't know what real "fun" flying is like, so you'll be able to stand the flight training environment better. Going from fun FBO style flying, to UND's strict rules made me feel sad.

Though I hate rules, UND really must have most of the rules they have. Some of them are rediculous, but for the most part, they keep everybody safe. There are quite a few goofballs in the UND aviation program.

all general ed classes suck, that is why they are general ed. it is the upper level courses in those departments that are pretty good, but saying that all acedemics suck is pure bs, unless you have experienced every single course UND has to offer, then you really can't make a blanket statement like that.

if i did it again, i probably wouldn't go to UND, but not because of acedemics, because of COST. i only came here because I thought it would be "cheap" it was not. and i paid MN rates.

I can't argue with that. There are a few aviation classes that if they were offered outside of UND I would take them... Human Factors and Flight Phys just to name a couple....

Flight Phys was one of my favorite courses at ERAU. Almost convinced me to jump ship, study biology and go into medicine...

i chose to come here because it was a way for me to finance flight training on the student loans ticket, because i am not supported by my family in any way and "pay as you go" part 61 would take years upon YEARS to complete....especially working crap jobs without a bachelors degree.

so bachelors degree + flight training and a way i could finance it on my own...

two birds in one stone for me, and for that im happy, but theres a lot of aspects that could be improved upon.

i will completely 100% say though that UND has AWESOME facilities that you are unlikely to find anywhere else. who else has a fleet of 80 planes no older than 4 years old??? thats pretty good stuff right there.

I agree with that completely. There's nothing like that in the Part 61 and even a lot of the 141 world. They can easily sell the program to new students... I know I couldn't believe how awesome their fleet and facilities were when I visited... I was like :drool:. And now UND's getting Cessnas :drool:.

Yup, i'll second the fact that the general education classes are sometimes miserable -- but yeah, they are what they are...gen eds. Every single one of the upper level courses have taken has been AWESOME. I guess it's possible that i've just hit it lucky with professors?

ive flown both, and i dont guess i really have any special preference for either, but adding some different planes in the logbook is certainly good.

anyone know what kind of cessnas? all 172's? or maybe some to replace the arrows also? some 182s would be nice, get that high perf endorsement in the book....

Yeah everyone kind of has their own preference. The new 172s are much more comfortable than the Warriors IMO. I'd be curious to find out what they will do for complex aircraft... Maybe some older RGs?

I just want to jump in and say that if you really are set on coming to UND then do it. There are people at UND and every other school that are going to hate where they are or love where they are. Each person is going to have a different perspective. With that said, read what everyone has to say here and then go visit the school. Develop your own opinion about what UND or another school has to offer and if it's right for you. If you choose UND, then yes you will have to take an abbreviated PPL course. It does cost some extra money, but that is how the program is set-up. General education classes can be dull, but that's mostly because those classes are not the aviation/business/geography/etc. classes that people came to UND for. UND has decided it is good to get a well-rounded education. Again, some agree, some do not. Decide for yourself. The state of North Dakota might be different than you are used to, but it wouldn't hurt to go visit it and see for yourself.

I do want to recommend that you try and do one of UND's Aerospace Camps they offer during the summer. Look into it on UND's website. It might be a bit late to do it this summer, but next summer wouldn't hurt. I also want to go ahead and encourage you to get your PPL. If you are that close to finishing it, then just go for it. It's a real privilege to have and you'll be able to enjoy it before you start your college career. Again, we are here to help you so don't be shy about asking questions or feel discouraged about your career path.

Yes. Having talked with the 'rents, they pretty much told me I don't have to plan this overnight..although I wish I could. We're not rich by any means, but by the time I get to college, a lot of things will be paid off, so it wouldnt be too much of a burden to redo some stuff. Practice makes perfect! And I'm always open to new and different ways of flying an airplane..there isnt just one technique.

And next year I do plan on going to the camp. I can't this year because I'm going to the EAA Air Academy camp thing. North Dakota shouldn't be too bad..I'm used to living in a town somewhat its size, although..its a whole lot warmer down here!!!

Maybe I'm just feeling more optimistic today

Yeah everyone kind of has their own preference. The new 172s are much more comfortable than the Warriors IMO. I'd be curious to find out what they will do for complex aircraft... Maybe some older RGs?

keeping the arrows and semis for now.. it will be at least 4-5 years before all the warriors are replaced with 172's. they only get something like 12/yr. 50 airplanes to replace = 4 yrs.

arrows don't fly enough, over 1/2 the arrows were here when i was in 323 5 years ago, and they weren't brand new then either.

Anyone know if they are getting the SP(180 HP) version or just the R(160 HP) version. Either way its going to be pretty nice having a new fully fuel injected fleet of cessnas. Hopefully they paint them in some color scheme so they dont look like every other cessna out there.

Well, ERAU has a mixed fleet of 172R and 172S so I would be UND would at least get some S models... UND doesn't want ERAU to be able to say "Hey look, our competitor bought the R and we have the S!"

Hopefully you'll be able to take these on cross countries... They seriously are so comfortable...

You better be able to take them on x/c's...they have autopilot. Gives you chance to catch up on some much needed sleep and monitor you progress on the display while at the same time looking for traffic witht he ads-b. Wonder if they will get xm radio too.
