what Medical certificate?

I have a quick question what Medical Certificate should I get for UND third or second? Just letting you know I am guessing I will be in there beginners program, since I never flew an aircraft before but I am eager to learn. I did take an intro flight and loved it.. Also if i get a third class can you upgrade to a second class later on?

Thanks!

I just came with a Third class. First and Second expire before you use em anyway. When Third class expires (after 36 months) then you can just go upgrade to a second or first class if you wish. Minimum that you need for UND is third class though.

Get a first class just so you know you can hold one, especially if you plan on flying for a living.

yo category,
what i did is got a first class medical. The cheapest i found was 90 bucks. You get it at the Kennedy Medical Offices at JFK airport. Since you live in Jersey it shouldnt be impossible. You can take the F train to the end of the line Jamaica 17pth street and Hillside avenue and take the Q10 I believe to the airport medical offices. Or if you're driving let me know i can dig up the number and ill give it to u so u can call em for directions.

I would agree with caffine and well think of it this way you need a second class to have a commercial cert. Now you will be starting as a avit 102 and only needing a third class medical. but when you get into Avit 325 make sure to get a second class medical before you start the course because thats the only way they can issue your commercial cert in regards to medical certificates.

First class medical is good for checking if you are able of holding it, but if you can pass the rest and have vision uncorrected or uncorrected to 20/20 then you can obtain a First class, especially if you are under 40. Second class expires after 12 months, if you get it at the beginning of 102, I am going to assume it is going to take longer then 12 months to wrap up 325. You would be left with a Third class anyway.

Where I took my medical they charged more for the Second class then the Third and subsequently more then either for the First. I just opted for the Third since I knew I could get the Second. If you know you can pass a second class medical or first just get the third class since you will have to get a new medical later on anyway...second class for 325 as Farva mentioned.

Thanks for bringing that to my attention by the way, I should be starting 325 in the Fall, so I guess I'm going to have to go in for another medical.

If the First Class is the same price as a second or third class then get it. The medical doesnt expire for 36 months, however after 6 months the 1st class privs expire. In the end it will give you 3rd class privs... Just get it so you know you can get one.

I'm pretty sure you don't need the class II medical to get your Commercial license (final 325 stage check)... If you don't have it, you won't be able to exercise the privileges of the certificate once you get it. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I think you are right... That's just me though. Makes perfect sense.

You're correct. You only need the 2nd Class to exercise the privelages of a commercial pilot certificate (ie - for hire). You do not need the 2nd class to fly with the certificate, only to fly for compensation or hire.

Second class medical is still good for 3 years if you dont exercise commercial privelages. It only good for 12 months if you excersice commercial privelages. (I think) I was told to get at least a second class medical before I came.

id say get the first class now so you can qualify for it when you are goin to eventually need it, or fix any problems (vision, etc.) now rather than later. Doesnt make that much sense to spend all of that money on flight training and then find out you can't qualify for a 1st class if you wanna fly for an airline or somem. also, at the place i told u about, the 1st class is 90 and the 2nd and third class are like 75 and 60 so its not that big of a difference, u might as well spend the extr money to get the 1st class.

All medicals are good for 36 months (Until age 40). The 1st and 2nd class privalages expire, but you will always be able to use the third class privilages.

Also when I go to faa official website to find out who gives medical certificate they are not listed for Jamaica?

So I am guessing I should get a First Class Certificate just to see if I can hold one..

as for intro flight It is in Westchester County Airport

OK, there is misinformation in this thread! For training, you only need a 3rd class cert, read the regs! now for excercising priveledges that is a different story.

also if you read the medical requirements (part 67) until you are over 40 years old a 2nd class cert has the EXACT same requirements as a first! so if you want to know if you can hold a 1st class get a 2nd!. some places there are differences in price and they can be substantial for that number

Thanks, I know I will only need 3rd cert for UND for now. What are some reason that can prevent me from getting a 2nd or a 1st class cert? I thought they all had the same exam...

Third class doesn't require 20/20 vision. Second class does, either corrected or non-corrected. Only thing is that some places just charge different amount of $ for each medical.
