Finish cfi through 90 day

I'm thinking about going to ATP's 90 day program but I have no desire to complete the cfi training. Mainly because I simply do not want to instruct. I know it makes you a great pilot, I just simply don't want to hassle with it.

Also, I had a freind that finished the 90 day program including the cfi training but didn't take his scheduled checkride because he felt he wasn't prepared enough and didn't want to fail. He planned on taking the check ride at an FBO but he applied to AE and got hired. He also has other freind that got hired their having lower times then the published mins.

My question is, how many ATP graduates get hired before they acutally instruct? Do you still get the guaranteed airline interviews if you choose not to do the cfi training?

Anyone else opting not to do the cfi training?

If you arent doing the CFI school why go to ATP!!??? There is NO POINT! Why spend nearly 60k for your Instrument-CMEL? That just is stupid! Sorry but those CFI's are pricless.... Just my thought!

What doesnt get me with all the folks who skip the CFI portion of ATP is. What do you do when you dont get hired right off the bat with your low hours? Sit around, work at Mcdonalds while you pay for the loan for the training, and if your lucky have enough left over to fly a couple hours a month?

Im definately doing the CFI course because if I need extra money, I can teach. In the long run, I do believe the CFI will pay for it self and be self rewarding. But it really isnt about the money, its the joy of flying and being able to share that with someone else.

Thats what my question is... How many ATP grads get hired without having to do any instructing? I guess I could finish the cfi training mean while apply at regionals and if I get hired then just leave the program. I know guys that got hired at AE with barely 300 TT and 50 ME

thats "whats that word again?" it happen exactly to my instructors friend. He also got hired by AE w/o his CFI. Now is this what AE doing? loweing mins again?

Rationalization-“I don’t need my CFI, I’ll never use it, it’s just a waste of money…”
If you pushed for just an extra two weeks at the end of the program you would have 3 lifetime ratings added to your pilot certificate. 5-years down the road when all the current crop of regional guys are trying to get on with a major/ freight/ fractional job, do you want to be the guy that says, “Oh, yea, the CFI program just really wasn’t worth the 2-weeks of my time.”
Everything in job hunting relates to setting yourself above the next guy. CFI ratings may just do that for you, and if they don’t...it’s only 2-weeks.
You would also forgo the fun of doing spin training with Rich and being called a girl the entire time J if you skip CFI school.

"I know it makes you a great pilot, I just simply don't want to hassle with it."

What a shame. I long for the good ole' days.....

Not to dog pile but....I just completed the program, stuck out CFI school, and finished w/ all the ratings as advertised. Definitely do-able. Why not put in the work and get everything you pay for? I mean, these are ratings that will stick around a lifetime. Sure, recency may come and go, but while you're in balls deep anyway why not go the distance. DE727 and others have said it better, just wanted to add my 2 cents....If at all possible, with what you have going on in life, try like hell to get ALL you can. It will make you a better pilot, trust me.

One other thing I just want to add... Being a CFI will also help you learn how to communicate better with someone as well. If you dont think learning how to communicate with the person you are sharing the flight deck with is not important you are crazy..... Just another reason as to why I think its very important to get all your RATINGS!

ATP loves it when people dont finish CFI school! $60k for an instrument rating and a multi engine/commercial ticket... man what a rip off!

Seriously, dont go to ATP if you dont want to be a CFI. Its just not worth it.

Im not against anyone that doesnt instruct either, there are plenty of other ways to build time. Instructing is probably the best way, but its not the only way.

What's your back up plan for the unfortunate event that at some time in your career you may be furloughed? Gonna sit on your rear and collect unemployment while you look for a new gig. Like some others have said, It stays with you, just like a college degree. IMO he who says "Because I don't want to" when it comes to flying has the wrong mentality to be a pilot, much less a professional pilot. If I were in HR, I would look at an ATP grad with no CFI's and I'd have to ask about it. If I heard "Because I just didn't want to" You would be dismissed from consideration for employment.

Uhm, not many... I've learned more from instructing than I could ever had by any other means besides more years of flying experience. Being a CFI builds confidence in yourself and your abilities. Just do the CFI part of it. Just do it! Thank us later. Even if you instruct for just 3 weeks, those 3 weeks you'll learn more than you did as a student.

:yeahthat: I could not agree more.

:yeahthat:

Just passed my CFI checkride with a faa inspector. It was no cake walk.

I build time in a cessna 210 flying corporate, but I have gotten the cfi cert for the exact reasons listed above!!

I just signed up here and I look forward to contributing on the message boards with you guys!
