Air Canada turbulence

Turn on CNN. Apparently an Air Canada diverted to Calgary due to severe turbulence. 10-15 people injured. CNN will have an "airline pilot" on in a few. Should be good

my thoughts exactly! Why dont the dumb people listen when the captain says to please keep seat belts fastened while seated. Its not that big of a deal. I even loosen mine while at cruise but at least its tight enough to keep me from hitting my head in the event something like this happens. People will never learn.

Seriously, people just don't believe us when we tell them to keep their seatbelts fastened unless they have a need to have them off (actually getting up to use lav, etc).

This stuff can happen without warning, at any time.

Please keep your seatbelts fastened anytime you're in your seat!
 
It's amazing that people realize the need for having seatbelts fastened in their car, yet have no problem unfastening them in an aluminum tube hurtling through the sky.

And, yes, I always keep my seatbelt fastened when I'm in my seat.

I prefer to have my seatbelt fastened in flight. Not just due to safety either. I find it more comfortable.
 
Apparently the injuries wouldve been 100% prevented had they buckled up. Eyewitness account said people were flying up to the ceiling, hitting their heads.........crazy stuff
 
Seatbelts? I don't need no stinkin seatbelts! As soon as the airplane lands, i'm unbuckling and going right for my overhead baggage. Screw the flight crew, what do they know?!

There is no accurate way to predict/map clear air turbulence. There has been some work done with Doppler Radar as well as LADAR (picture radar but with light waves instead of radio waves) but it is not very accurate or reliable. Some of the higher end Rockwell Collins radar units do predict turbulence and can display it as a "v" on screen, but from what I understand of those units they are seeing shear zones between precipitation and not CAT.

Also, the LADAR (for some reason I want to call them LIDAR... anybody know?) units have VERY limited range, and even if they were to see CAT ahead, there would hardly be enough time to alert the cabin crew and ensure everybody is buckled in.
 
Some of the reports are talking about a malfunction with the autopilot. Could have been caused by turb, doesn't really say yet.

In any case people need to have their belts done up. I've been bounced around plently of times with no warning and also had to make a sudden stop while taxing many times.
