I need your help!! Thinking about quitting XJT

Jtrain, listen to 777. He went to ATP, flies a "$30M turboprop" for "Southernjets Connection" (WTF?), and appears to be some sort of airline economist.

Actually I'm just a sunday morning quarterback:) Anyways, I wish you XJT guys the best but honestly, IMO, self-branded 50 seat RJ + High fuel prices= -$$$$$$

From Expressjet, I wouldn't bail. I personally think that SKW's future is maybe a little less uncertain than Xjet's due to the fact that we're not trying something completely different with 15% of our fleet, but there's a very real chance that our growth will slow down...and that could mean you'd be stuck in MKE for a while. That wouldn't make the switch worth it.

If you were at almost any other airline, I'd say bail for the superior work rules and better pay, but your pay isn't going to get better by coming to SKW from Xjet.

And an ATR *does not* cost $30 million, nor does it fly like a 172. It flies like a dump truck with wings.

Hmmm.. you must have learned that in your first week of indoc. Nevertheless, you continue to show your true colors.

Just for the record, you dont work for Southernjets anything.

Indoc instructor was talking about the CRJ:) There were only 4 ATR people in a class of 20 so most of indoc referenced the CRJ.

Would you be singing the same tune if ExpressJet called first instead of ASA?

Never applied there

Well Im done with this one. I simply stated my opinion and apparently Merit has taken it personally.

I've been thinking of quitting XJT and moving over with SKYW. It will suck going through training again and starting at the bottom of the list at another carrier, but I think it might be a choice.
.....
Anyway, this EWR base is killing my life. I'm sure a lot of people will say to just stick it out and what not, but its really not for me.
What do you guys think?

My .02 on your situation:

Since most here will tell you the industry is a crapshoot, I think we can take it as an assumption that things fluctuate.

Assuming success at any given company has equal chance, it comes down to the company itself.

You have something in hand: A seniority number and a job. Exposing yourself to a hiring/training cycle takes that away.

Given your present job DOES have what you want, and you just don't have it yet.. be patient.

If all things fluctuate, you're already in position to get what you want, without giving up the 'bird in hand'.

Have you tried doing some base networking, ie, going out and talking to guys or posting a flyer for a base trade, etc?

In the interim, there are closer bases (ie, IAH) that might help. Try for those!

Beyond that, consider the company- do they treat you well? Do you have union backup if the s*** hits the fan?

I'm with the 'be patient and wait it out crowd, in your case'.

Good luck man, whatever you decide.

And you've been in the airline industry how long?

That's what I was thinking. Merit, you might want to read some of your posts agan, because you often come across as just as know-it-all-ish as 777...without much more experience.

Regional FO's like us generally don't know squat.

Except I do know that the CRJ700 also doesnot fly like a 172.

I am not going to sit here and post #### as fact unlike some others. As for business/finance experience? I'll take that one hands down over a brand new FO that just graduated ATP seeming since I came from a slightly different back ground.

Everybody whip theirs out. Let's see who has the biggest, best, longest...............resume, shall we?

:panic:

Sheesh guys. In my opinion it is pretty silly to argue a point by calling out someone's background. Either you have the information and knowledge to give a cogent argument against their ideas, or you don't. Using someone's (lack of) experience is spurious at best, and does nothing to further your side. If you think someone's lack of experience means that they don't know what the heck they are talking about, then step up and prove them wrong!

Actually just graduated college. Technically Im not an ATP graduate. Just did my multi and cfi with them. Instructed at ATP for a lil while though but didn't do the career pilot program. Just some info...:)

the big problem though, is that xjet has stopped hiring, so there's no seniority to gain, no better schedules to shoot for...

Point of clarification...

Just about every day of the week... Jtrain and GreenDay are gaining in seniority without even realizing it. Not from a perm-bid... Not from new-hires... Not from upgrades... but from pure attrition. No where is your move up the seniority list greater... than from the bottom of the seniority list... as long as the majors are hiring that is... ;)

Pilots in the mid-top range of the seniority list are being hired at CAL, DAL, NWA, FedEx, NetJets, etc...

"Every time a bell rings... a pilot get's their wings..." ;)

You are in a seniority based industry. Think of it this way... if you and Jtrain were to leave XJT during this process... the folks less senior to you would move up two slots... and that's with no new contracts... no upgrades... no perm-bid... etc. It is movement... slow movement... but movement nonetheless.

I'm like a broken record here, but I seriously wouldn't do it. Stick it out, build some experience, move up the food chain.

Bases open/close go senior/junior daily and neither of the two airlines in question truly "control" the flying so there are no guarantees.

Imagine the CMR guy who left a job with seniority at a carrier hubbed in ATL because he didn't want to commute MCO-ATL any more. With MCO closed, now he's got to resort to jetway knife-fights to get on one of the few flights to CVG while ATL's got a massive amount of options.

Bird in hand...two in the bush... yadda yadda yadda.
