"Flagship" Pilots:

But why? Who cares? Aren't you the one that always talks about being positive and enjoying your job? Maybe you should just quit, nobody likes a whiner.

Oh, poor Wheelsup got his feelings hurt . . . it's so cute!!!

Oh, that was a poor attempt at being cynical . . . that was even more cute!

I would've thanked those guys for making me an extra $21.70.

I have no doubt that you would have. Not in the best interest of the passengers, though.

Feelings hurt? Why would I care what another crew did? How does that reflect upon me? I just think it's very hypocritical, that's all.

This isn't flightinfo folks.

I've got a bigger donger than all ya'll and haven't forgotten to close a flight plan in about 15 years.

I win! Behave.

Engine On to Engine Off. Actually I think it moves once fuel flow moves.

Actually, it is probably a Hobbs that works off of oil pressure. Been looking at putting a Hobbs in my personal airplane and if I remember correctly, there are three basic types, those that run off of oil pressure (engine start to engine shutdown), electric that run when the master is on, and those activated by another switch such as an airspeed sensing vane or a pressure switch on the gear.

Most rentals use oil pressure hobbs to reduce the possibility of flying with the master off to reduce time or accidentally leaving the master on and adding time.

You are correct. There is another one also. If you have an electric tach, they can be activated at a reference RPM setting (ie...starts counting when above 1500 rpm).

Most retractable airplanes I've seen have the squat switch activated type, hence my previous question.

I always taught the FO's that I flew with at Pinnacle to not cancel their clearance... it helps keep down the competition from the other regionals for our flying. If they are later, they don't get the flying that Pinnacle deserves!

This may be a little off topic but based on what I see in your signature, I would guess that you are a real ultimate ninja :D

...okay, obviously not and IFR rated pilot, but why can't planes land or takeoff if a plane hasn't xld thier flightplan?

Also, I thought when you heard this:

"American 1278, radar services are terminated, contact tower on 119.08."

That the IFR flightplan was automatically terminated...

Depends on the type of airspace and the controlling authority.

We'd fly into MQT sometimes under IFR and our OpsSpecs (basically the bible that your airline operates under) said that we couldn't cancel our IFR flight plan in flight/on arrival.

So we'd get handed off from MSP center to CTAF on approach, making position reports in the blind, break out, land and cancel IFR on the taxi.

If you don't cancel the flight plan and you're not under radar coverage, there's really no reliable method of determining where you are in order to give another IFR aircraft separation from other IFR aircraft in the area.

You get used to flying into high density airports where you needn't worry about the intricacies of operating in a non-radar/non-tower environment. it does take practice.

I remember riding side-saddle in a 727 and flying into small airports in the south where the tower was closed. There's be some 20,000-plus hour highly experienced captain in the left seat, a 6,000-hour FO in the right seat, both pilots had probably been shot at by bad guys throughout their previous career (actually one guy had actually shot down numerous MiG's in Nam), but often times they'd have the lowly second officer work the radios in non-towered environments because it can be intimidating.

Max, simple answer (and Doug pretty much said it) is that when you are operating IFR they are required to separate you from other IFR traffic and controlled VFR traffic. If there is no tower and you are below their radar coverage they have no way of knowing if you've landed or are still in the air somewhere. So instead of separating other traffic from you they just protect the entire airspace and don't let any other IFR traffic in or out.

It's a pain, but it does prevent bending metal.

Makes sense!

We had a King Air do the same thing at my airport once.

I was sitting at the end of the runway waiting for release. Gray Clnc Dlvry said they had a King Air inbound on the ILS to our airport(Untowered). He never made any calls on the CTAF but we saw him land, taxi off, and park. ATC would not release us because the King Air had not cancelled. I told them I could see the King Air in parking, engines off, and people getting out. Still would not release until they called. Because the fuelers were out at the King Air, noone answered the phone when Gray called. We ended up taxiing back to parking, instructor got out and told the pilot's to cancel their IFR so we could leave. I wanted to tell them they were number one, and hand them a bill for some hobbs time in an Arrow, but I did not.

Is it normal not to be released because of this? I can understand waiting for an approach, but if I am telling ya I saw it land, are they just being difficult?

Not that I am advocating this... but that seems to be the perfect time to go ahead and make the call for them ;)

Wow, I no longer visit flightinfo and I now know why I've been spending less time here. Calling out another airline on a public forum for something done in flight? I'm off to my guitar forums.

Which forums? I've been looking for a good one. :)

Yeh, this place is becoming more and more FI like everyday..

Eh, kinda.

Im just getting tired of every time I come on here its another thread like "Which regional is the greatest?" or "Low time vs. High time" or "Spikey haired, ipod wearing FO is the suxor!!111!!" or "What is upgrade time at XYZ airline?"

It would be great if people used the search function before they posted....
