Wanna bet? All it will take is for a Mesa type operator to undercut another regional and then the pressure is on for paycuts. There will always be someone willing to undercut your pay.

I agree. You could even cut first year pay further (gulfstream with RJs or 737s). It could even cost you several thousand dollars for a type rating. They've been doing it in Europe for years. I think the only solution is for us all to get together and meditate and pray for the absolute financial destruction of every low paying jet operator in existence.
 
If you guys say so, but the way I see it the bottom feeder regionals already can't hire enough 250 hour wonders for 20k a year.
 
Whoah there Nelly. They're actually upping the forecasts for the amount of pilots they're looking to hire and parking 50-seaters.

Who said they only cut the first year pay? Since the majors cut their pay, the regionals are closer in cost structure. One of the quickest/easiest ways to regain the cost advantage is for the regionals to cut the top tier pay scales and QOL rules.

Good. I wasn't the only one that saw that. I thought that bit of sky that hit me on the head looked a little funny. With staffing at the regionals the way it is now, maybe we'll see more 50 seaters getting parked. We can't get FOs fast enough here, so that might have to happen anyway.

As for the Q4 loss....let's wait until after the fourth quarter to say they're gonna lose money. Esp coming off a record Q3.

You don't reduce capacity by increasing the number of seats you're flying. You must understand that these are things airline executives believe:
- people want jets
- frequency of service is everything

So in a world where capacity at mainline out of the hubs is being constrained and given that you don't want to reduce the frequency of service the 50 seat jet is about to return with a vengance. This rush to 70 seat jets make sense when the industry is in an upswing, but when it downturns, as it looks like it might be about to, the 70 seat jet won't make any more sense than running a 757 where you used to run a 737.

"Next gen turboprops" are fine, assuming we can keep the nose gear from collapsing, which seems to be an unfortunate problem, but cities that have had "jet" service will not stand for prop service - look what happened in New York when Delta started running Dashs up there.

So what happens. The 50 seat jets stay running around to the small markets. The 70 seat jets start picking up markets that used to be mainline and the turboprops get slotted in where they can, but they're not making wholesale swaps for jets. Driving down the number of mainline jobs and driving up the number of piss poor paying regional jobs. Like it or not, that's where the market is going.
 
632-650 new hires is this latest projection.

The Soy Sauce MD-90's are basically signed for, waiting on closing. It will be interesting to see what this domestic shakeup will do to that deal.

As was previously said, this is only people that have no interaction with passengers that are being cut back.
