MEI situation???

Honestly, the only reason I'm even instructing here instead of somewhere else is because I haven't graduated yet and don't really have any plans of staying any longer. I feel kinda guilty saying that. Should I? :o

No, I agree with you. Instructing here is great while you're a student. I've noticed already, though, that the 141 environment is pretty restrictive in what you can/can't do as an instructor. Not that it's bad on the whole, I don't think I could've gotten a better education anywhere else, but now that I'm instructing, I feel really restricted in what we can/can't do on a lesson. Personally, I'm planning on going the 135 route, but I imagine I'll do some part 61 instructing first. I'm looking forward to that! :yar:

I don't feel too restricted yet. Heck, for my 102, he had an instrument lesson and I got a block of airspace and took him in the clouds. So that was pretty fun. Longest stretch of actual I think I've ever had. haha :D

I know what you mean though. You have a set lesson sequence that you must follow, but at the same time you are allowed to repeat lessons at your leisure and I kinda like the structure. I've been in both 61 and 141 environments and there's certain things I like better about each.

That's pretty cool. I didn't know you could do that for the instrument stuff in 102.

it isn't THAT restrictive if you know how to work the system. just because there are set topics to be covered on a lesson, doesn't mean you can't add in more stuff, etc....

also, i don't teach any differently on main campus than i did when i taught part 61 or over at UMC

Yeah as long as you're not providing "instrument instruction"(as it is worded in the regs), it is perfectly acceptable to go in the clouds to teach BAIF. You as an instructor have to make the appropriate radio calls though. ;)

The situation here really sucks. I am in CFI right now and it took 2 weeks to get an initial instructor, then he got hired two weeks later, then it took another week to get a new instructor, then I was paired up with another CFI, but they are 7 lessons ahead of me so we have to share our launch time equalling out to 1 or 2 lessons each week. They have to do something.

For all you current CFIs out there...fill out the survey they just emailed to us on Novell. It has to do with the current situation. There are a couple questions and it has a recommendation section on it.

out of curiosity, what opinions are they soliciting and questions are they asking?

or is this super duper top secret UND employee only classified project strategy session?

sometimes i really feel like, if you want to make things better for the CUSTOMERS (which the students are), sure we might not know everything, but maybe it would be good to solicit our feedback and find the keypoints sometimes.....

mainly about whether or not the instructors will be sticking around or not, i think they are trying to work out the scheduling problems

p.s. whats going on with your situation? i was told by some people that if you arent' registered for a lab then you can't start working yet......

According to Prof. Bridewell, he says we aren't the customers, but rather the products. Kind of a strange idea, if you ask me.

EDIT: I see what he is saying with respect an employer's point of view, but as far as UND is concerned we are the customers, and should definitely be treated like it.

Exactly. I was noticing it about a year or two into my training here, and I notice it more than ever now, especially since I started working here and listening to the "hangar talk". TONS of instructors and even a few people working higher up that are pretty weak on customer service.

The survey requests feedback on the current hiring situation at UND. I have expressed my thoughts in the anonymous () form.

uhm, someone is sorely mistaken if they do not view students as customers.

what exactly are they going to "produce" if they do not satisfy the educational demands of the students????!?!

I was given a survey today in 414 ground school asking whether or not we would be interested in eventually taking MEI and why or why not.

If someone could please express on my behalf to get rid of half the sim time. It's ridiculous to have 18+ hours of sim in that course. What a waste of time and money.

Maybe UND doesn't realize that for both of my PIC types, I've had less than 30 hours of sim. This is for an airplane weighing over 20,000 lbs and they have more sim time for a seminole.

Just plain stupid.

i think it is because the instrument stuff is unsat a lot on the 103, which is why 14 hours of the 18 are instrument flights

i wish there was more flight time though, teaching 3 325's gets a little boring with all the sims
