Questions about Mesa Airlines

Hang on... I'm starting some popcorn for this one.

I don't work there but know plenty of people that do. Yes, it is really that bad. ALPA is only as strong as the local pilot group so that plays no roll in anything. Also, if management feels like they can walk all over the CBA and get away with it, they will. No idea about the Delta flying out of JFK. As far as I knew all the Delta flying was on the Freedom certificate and the 900s are on the Mesa certificate. Not sure how that would work.

The 86 seater -900's are on mesa's cert and the 76 seater -900 for Delta will be on the Freedom cert.

I have a really good friend who works at Mesa..

He absolutely LOVES it..

Then again...he pours salt into his open wounds, likes for his girlfriend to whip him and he does all sorts of other really strange things... ;)

CFIse- there are no CRJ's on the freedom certificate? Huh? Then why did JFK just open to CA/FO on the freedom side for the CRJ? Might want to check that.

There are no CRJs on the Freedom certificate. That's a fact and I stand by it. The first CRJ for the certificate is either a gleam in Bombardier's eye or on the line being built - but it sure as eggs is eggs hasn't flown yet, and it certainly hasn't been delivered to Mesa.

I'm well aware of what people are bidding, and I'm apparently a lot more aware than you are of when they expect to be in JFK flying CRJs.

Mesa's website stipulates minimum TT and multi-time in order to apply for FO. Out of curiosity, if they are hurting this bad for pilots do you think they would go for applicants with "wet" commercial tickets? Just a thought.

Last I heard they were already hiring applicants with wet commercial tickets.

Heck, even places like ASA etc are taking some people with wet tickets.

Naw... It's been civilized mostly. The normal Mesa Cheerleaders stood up and the normal Mesa Bashers sort of ignored it.

Unfortunately I don't have any popcorn to cook (and no way to cook it) in this crappy hotel room I am in.

So the SB email was a joke?

What are you stupid? The e-mail said bid for it. It didn't say when it would be awarded or when it would be effective.

There are NO CRJs on the Freedom certificate - the first CRJ was slated for August, but was delayed to November because Delta (I guess since it's their money) wanted the Nexgen interior.

Classy.

So, an honest question: How does Mesa have any chance whatsoever to staff 14 new airplanes when they aren't even close to covering the flying that they already have?

Easy. They spam the mailbox of everyone who receives a CMEL certificate and offers them a "Free CRJ Course" and guaranteed job. All minimums will be waived for those who "accept" their offer. Next, they will attend HS job fairs in an effort to attract a more naive audiences.

Shortly thereafter, those sucked into the Bigger and Better Deal (BBD) will realized their poor situation and QOL and will tell their stories to repel more future aviators away from a once respected career. Thus perpetuating an even greater shortage of aviators.

OR...They offer $55K/yr for 1st yr FOs and they get plenty of 5000+ hour applicants.

Ding! Ding! Ding!

There's no shortage of pilots. Just a shortage of pilots willing to do the work for the current level of compensation.

I attended one of Mesa's offsite interviews a couple of weeks ago - they will not interview you unless you have min 500/100 (at this moment - who knows if they can't fill their classes). The exceptions are folks who've attended a jet transition class (ATP, JetU, etc.). One person I met there got the offer with 280/35 and a grad of JetU.

Thanks for all of the responses to this thread. Bottom line, seems the rules are terrible, and the pay is about industry standard for regionals (ie. CRUD).

The original poster asked about days off. That is an irrelevent question because any days off they get are swiftly taken when they get junior assigned (mandatory) to fly those days. Think turning off your phone will avoid it? I 've heard stories of crew scedulers knocking on hotel room doors, and waiting at arrival gates. I've talked to a pilot who used to regularly exit the plane through the service entrance in order to get on to the ramp to escape the scedulers waiting for him on the jet bridge. When you lose 80 pilots per month and only manage to hire 20, that's about all you can do to keep crews in the air, and they often end up cancelling flights when that dosn't work.

That's the actual truth. They send several crew schedulers to CLT, IAD, ORD, and send a couple down the road to PHX on a rotational basis to hang out in the crew room to assign those "sitting around" and those on ready reserve.:banghead: They'll junior man your azz in a heartbeat!:panic: I'd use the service exit too! They don't have SIDA badges that allow ramp access.

Um... Isn't that the purpose of ready reserve.. to be on reserve to fly? Weird.

Well no one likes to answer their phones or the phone in the crew room. They'll cram as much time on you as they can and even try to make you fly over your legal limits. A Mesa pilot's best friend is calling "fatigue" I heard that word soooo much when I was at Mesa. I think they teach that the first day in the union!:D

They'll cram as much time on you as they can .... But watch your monthly limit.
Let'em. Max out every month and then take Nov and Dec off.

Sec. 121.481
Flight time limitations: One or two pilot crews.
(d) No pilot may fly more than 32 hours during any seven consecutive days, and each pilot must be relieved from all duty for at least 24 consecutive hours at least once during any seven consecutive days.
(e) No pilot may fly as a member of a crew more than 100 hours during any one calendar month.
(f) No pilot may fly as a member of a crew more than 1,000 hours during any 12-calendar-month period
