"Don, you are going to have to tell that (sort of) MEI story some time."
Sure. I've told it before at this forum and would hate to be called a "hater" for telling it over and over.
There was a time in the mid-80's when I had 2000 total, low multi, and was working for the FAA. I decided to add to my pilot resume by adding the ATP multi with allATP's at KLGB. I believe it was $699 for the MEI and $699 for the ATP. I did the ATP course and got what I paid for. Though the two training flights I did were from the left seat and focused only on ATP, my logbook was signed as ATP/MEI prep. When I had showed up for the training, the school manager pulled me aside and said "if you pay the MEI course fee, we can give you a MEI as well as your ATP". I was not an active instructor and had done all my previous training at a small FBO, so I figured, hey, these guys must know what they are doing and it all must be okay. So I did it. Took my ATP ride and got signed off for ATP and MEI. Never sat in the right seat once or demonstrated any sort of MEI knowledge.
Having been in the biz a while, now, I don't think that's how it normally works. I lived in LA on and off after that, and later flew Convairs out of LAX and did some fish spotting in 150's. That DE's name came up years later as having his ticket pulled for a while after being involved in an accident....at least that's what I heard.
If you were around LGB in the mid-80's, I'm sure you'd remember the guy.
Oh, and though I've been critical of the 90 day program for years at this forum, I only discovered I was, in fact, and ATP alumni until very recently. Wonder if ATP would like to add me to their "successful grads" link at their website?
