What BA to get...

After I'm done with my ratings etc. I'm thinking about doing night classes to get my BA. I'm just trying to reach out and see what options I have.

Let me also say that I hate business, and I tried it, and miserably failed. I'd like to stay away from that as much as I could (or anything related like accounting/economics etc). I have thought about education, pyschology, or some kind of aviation related BA from Embry Riddle.

Reason I mention education is because, well I love teaching people. Something I really enjoy besides flying, and people I have helped in aviation have always told me I really know how to teach, so it always made me happy :). If I did something in this field, it would probably be more geared towards elementary education, I like working with younger kids.

I thought about Pyschology because I like studying people, how they react, and help with their problem solving, and analyze situation, how they react to certain actions etc.

and for aeronautics, well because I like aviation related stuff :)

I know a few CFIs at my school that got their BA at night while CFIing at night. People that did this, how hard was it? how many classes you take a semester?

I also want to get this BA because most legacies want it. I don't really want it for furlough reasons honestly... If I was laid off, I rather CFI probably :)

Well bro, probably so would everybody else that was getting laid off along with you. Which, is the reason to get the BA/BS degree in a completely different field of study that interests you, and you wouldn't mind working in the event of a hurtful downswing in the airline biz.

IMO, the best possible answer to the question about what to get a degree in is: What would give you a better chance to economically survive in the event of a furlough? Also, it has to be something that you really wouldn't mind doing if you ever lost your medical or did get the furlough.

Just my own personal take on the situation :)

You answered your own question.

Education or psychology.

Thread over.

That was simple :)

I see how you look at it, but if I look at it from that point of view, i'm in the wrong field to start with :) I would say pysology (hell I don't even know how to spell it lol) , but I suppose I would need to be a MD for that, which is going to require residency and all that stuff so... plus the amount of studying I would need to do for that will probably eat me alive while trying to work at the same time.

why not something like professional aeronautics or something? I know, I know... its still aviation related I just can't seem to get aviation out of my head....

and they would lay off someone like me...hah!

CRIMINAL JUSTICE! Do it...

something else that has always crossed my mind. Also go to a LEO academy, and I can become an officer in FL while i'm laid off lol....

for me, it was either going to be LEO or pilot, I chose pilot because pay is better in the long run lol :x (well that and I"m not a citizen yet, so unless I was in HI, I couldn't become a LEO anyways hehe)

I actually can't believe I forgot to mention that.

You won't learn anything new in an aeronautics degree that you wouldn't learn in your normal flying + airline ground school.

It all depends. Are you getting the degree to better yourself or just to check off that box?

Get the ed/psych degree.

I guess you still have a little more research to do then, bro. My wife is a Psychology BA and is a Special Ed Teacher. The BA is all that she needed to get hired into the teaching position. Although, she did get a MS in Special Education....which was all paid for by the school district (after she was already working there).

Plenty of entry level jobs out there for Psychology. Ever seen some of the AP Psychology classes in a High School? Guess what the requirement is for that teacher position?

ugh, I honestly don't know if im just doing it to 'check off the box' kinda messed up to say... My dad always tells me I'll never know when I might need it. Usually whenever I don't listen to him, he ends up being right.

psych might be bit hard to get unless it was just that (full time student, full time dedication) my SO is did elementary education, so that might be a bonus to me, she will be able to help me out.

yeah, you're right as far as psychology goes, I don't have too much info about it, I need to look more into it.

Exactly. What else aside from one of those places that checks the box, can you do with a degree in aviation science? Psych or education the opportunities are endless in the event, god forbod, you lose the medical, get furloughed and times in the buisness are rough, or just downright want to leave flying.

Do you or anyone else know about how much a commercial pilot will top out at in their career?

Get a BA in a subject that you actually enjoy learning about. For me, that was politics, for some it was aviation management. . .to each his own.

do the airlines care what your major is? I mean would they prefer say (just an example) elementary education vs psychology?

Dont get one in Sociology if you want to make a lot of money. That is if the aviation thing doesnt pan out. :)

No, they don't.

They just want to see that you are a bit more rounded along the edges, with having a higher level of education than some of the passengers riding in the back.

I don't speak from airline experience at all, unlike others, but I highly doubt they.... the airline execs, are looking at it from that point of view....as you suggest, surreal.

That is just not a nice way to think or to say..IMO. Ohhhh, the hostility that always precedes you. ;)

It could be in basket weaving 101 for all they care, they just check a box that says "4-year accredited degree"
