Since we all care about Hockey...

Sorry guys, but hockey is already D-I. The fee is for all other Fighting Sioux sports to move to D-IAA. Happens to every school when they decide to move up. Higher division results in higher fees which results in higher student fees. Hockey team has been there for years. now instead of football playing teams like West Chester, they will be playing better teams that nobody has ever heard of. D-IAA jumps usually include the "opportunity" to play D-I teams like Minnesota and WI. A swell opportunity to watch our team get killed.

will never happen because the mighty Gophers of Minnesota have refused to compete against us because of our apparently hostile nickname:rolleyes: . Except in hockey because they have no choice because we are both in the same league (WCHA). Apparently, this rule has been in place for sometime, however it isn't really adheared to because the UND swimming & diving teams have been competing against the U of M for along time. But swimming & diving are both small, non-rev. sports that aren't in the spotlight, so nobody at either university apparently cares. or maby its because the swim & dive team is really one of the only other sports that can compete at the D1 level. This will be a different story with football and basketball though.

hypothetically, do you think that the U of M would refuse to play in a bowl game against our football team (lets say 25 years down the road) because of our nickname? $$$

I don't think the university is to blame for the sub-par facilities on the east side of campus. John Odegard and alot of others worked hard to get the aviation school were it is. They got their hands dirty and took care of what they needed to. We can't hold everybody's hand (business school...) they need to create opportunity for themselves.

Trust me the nickname will be gone by then! UND is wasting "donors" money on a losing battle

I think you are underestimating the schools ability. They should be able to definitely compete in D1-AA football and womens basketball. They will never be in the same class as Ohio state and schools to that regard. But there are a lot of teams like Robert Morris, Liberty & Stony Brook that we can compete with. There are so many schools with less than 20,000 students that only can compete in basketball and nothing else. If you can compete in a few sports thats better than many others.
