Since we all care about Hockey...

club soccer, though the vast majority of my time was devoted towards my musical pursuits (jazz band 3 years, marching band, symphony, stage band, pit orchestra, choir accompaniment)

up until highschool i played soccer and baseball.

and even now during the summer i enjoy getting out 2 to 3 times a week to play soccer.

im not a total sports hater, and i do participate in sports and see benefits with them.... i am just hard pressed to see what a small hockey program in the middle of nowhere has to offer.

That makes sense, but as someone already said earlier, everything but hockey is moving up, since hockey is already D-I. I'm not educated enough on this issue to tell you if I really think it is beneficial or not, but it seems like a lot of schools really want to try to cash in on moving up to D-I (mainly for basketball and football). Ohio State is an example of a place where the sports bring in an incredible amount of dough. Also, many people like to point to Boise St.'s football program as the sort of overnight success story to model after, as they moved up through the ranks pretty quickly and found themselves winning a BCS bowl last year. From what I understand teams make quite a bit of money off of winning these games, and any T.V. time is usually viewed as great exposure. The school I am at right now is really starting to push their basketball program and just re-signed the coach to a $750k/yr, and I think 8-year contract, because they want to continue to get more national exposure, bring in more students, and bring in more money. Whether this is the right way to do things or not, really remains to be seen, I think. However, some places are making it happen for them, and a lot of schools are jumping on the bandwagon.

i was a member of the Houston Orienteering Club.

very big. very active. and VERY CHALLENGING in the deep woods of texas...

oh and the heat.

hahaha

I hear we have very active clubs and groups like that here in Grand Forks. :sarcasm:

(I'm sorry people, some day I will stop LOL)

Oh ...speaking of things to do... I've been wanting to get into geocaching (I know, dorky :D) but it sounds like a lot of fun!

Oooh! We tried that last year (on a very exciting North Dakotan weekend). It was fun searching for it and it ended up being in the nook of a tree along the river. Kind of disappointing, though, to find it with stuff like a used happy meal toy, a really crappy watch, and a few nickels.

I would have rather seen the D-I money and fighting sioux logo legal fees go to renovating all the old dorms and put in air conditioning. Also a parking ramp where students can actually park, unlike the current one being built! Even the judge over the case has said the legal fees are out of control and I'm sure the cost will be passed on to us students!

How about a parking ramp in front of Gamble. Oh, but that would mean a loss of parking ticket revenue for owners of the little 3 wheel lunchboxes that I wish to run over every time I see one :D

But, but, they have a hundred million dollar stadium who's fate could be decided by the case! semi-:sarcasm:

I would kind of like it if they hadn't built the "non-denominational," i.e. Christian, church in the middle of the grassy area between the Hughes Fine Arts building and the coulée as well as the "Celebrated" wall that's purpose I have yet to determine. And I'm not complaining about its costs since apparently it was in the will of some old rich guy who wanted a church built on that section of campus; however it does take away the "natural" feel that area used to have.

Do you even read or do you just come up with ideas on your own. All the money was and always will be by private donations. There are a few with deep pockets (Engelstad family) who will finance this for a while. Besides the lawsuit was only agreed upon by the SBOHE if it is paid for by private donations ONLY!!!!

I would be happy to see a series of ropes and harnesses be set up in the middle of the link so the students could pull their heads out of their a$$e$ but apparently thats a common place to be and so my requests have been denied

On a side note: now that i got myself worked up on this whole name issue. I wish this were common knowledge.
Argument about Mr. Engelstad and his donation....No money went to education we dont need this big fancy hockey arena.

There is supposed to be another donation of equal or greater value that will more or less go primarily to endowment. Mr. Englestad was a little pissed off at a particular group of faculty and students who feel the need to improve the campus by changing the name. Wow they shot themselves in the foot. What incredible selfless actions they deserve a hand...Ha. I have heard this from 3 different sources who speak with members or friednds of the family. This is probably why the school is still fighting this issue.

As was already mentioned, hockey is already D1, so if you're gonna bitch about something, at least get your facts straight

I was quoting WDAZ news on this. They need to get their facts straight. I don't know why the local news was on my TV because I never watch it.

Same reason it was on my tv. Simpsons, Family Guy, and American Dad were all on before the news.
