What happened? BobDDuck? What's the word on the line? You guys having that much trouble finding pilots?

I think what happened was our management blew it and we have become WAY understaffed. Also all of our J4J guys are going to leaving (although they have been held for 9 months) so we are going to be needing to upgrade people. The problem is we are too short FOs to upgrade any to CA. Throw in the fact that our pay is not very good, our upgrade is known to be long and we have no growth they are having problems filling the the classes. The CP I asked about it said that all the regionals are having this problem were they give 12 guys a class date and only 5 show up. He says that people are going to go to the best place they get an offer at.

Is your management still unsure about what is going to happen after 2009?

Not sure what 2009 has to do with anything other then our contract is up for negotiation. The leases on the airplanes all run well past that. I think you might be thinking of Piedmont.

And our management is unsure about what will happen tomorrow.

We could get sold or completely go away at any time, but so could any other company. I really hope they keep us around, but there are no guarantees. That's just the nature of this industry.

We're getting ready to hire a lot of pilots, we're super short on captains right now. For the upgrades to happen we need more FO's because we're on thin ice as far as FO staffing is concerned. I wouldn't be surprised to see 100+ upgrades in the next year or so and around 120+ new hires. That's a big portion of our pilot group.

Looks like our captains are going to be doing some babysitting on a regular basis here pretty soon.

Ya know what's crazy, is every single airline out there but mine is hiring like crazy and upgrading. So frustrating. :(

I would think PSA would be selling it's domiciles more than anything else. Cheap cheap cheap to live makes all the difference. I'm not sure about DAY but I'm a big fan of CLT, there's a few here in ORF that commute from there.

I never hear much about PSA, one of my old instructor's instructor went to PSA and I heard they liked the company, that's about it. What's QOL like, schedules, etc. What are upgrade mins?

PSA *could* go selling their domiciles (personally, I don't really like Dayton, but it IS cheap to live in) but we open and close bases so fast it wouldn't be a great idea to come here just because of that.

They are going to have to do something to attract more candidates. I see a hiring bonus in the future as well as MAYBE opening the contract to fix first year pay. As far as training goes, it is pretty good. You get per diem from day 1 and full 72 hour credit as well as a single hotel room (bad hotel though) and pass travel as soon as your ID clears. Heck, they give you a temp ID on the first day that is normally good enough to get you around the USAir system. However, once you are done with training it will take about a year to see those level of paychecks again.

Fly8 to answer your questions, QOL is what you make of it. The past 3 years have been very slow with little to no upgrades. Things are starting to move so people are happy about that. There are currently 1.5 year reserve FOs in CLT but I think that number will start coming down. Up until a few months ago there was less then a month of reserve in Knoxville and about 3 months in Dayton. Those times are slowly coming up but I think they will stabilize around 4 months in the future. The last class to actually upgrade was 4.5-5 years of seniority. The next class is down to about 4 and the one after that has some guys with less the 4 years in it. Schedules are MAX 15 days off (with only 3 or 4 lines having that number. For a while most lines were around 11 days off but that number seems to have come up to around 12 or 13. The biggest problem I see with the lines this month is that the trips go from early to late and back to early with no regard for sleep patterns. Our management is pretty incompetent. They have stated multiple times that they will not spend money on anything unless they see a return in 6 months or less. The good thing about that is no PBS for us.

No upgrade mins other then and ATP and 1000 hours in type. If they really do start hiring a mass of 300 hour guys down the road I can see some mins set it place.

If this thread was about Jet University lowering the mins to just a Comm/Inst/ME for PSA Airlines, it would have been well over 7 pages now, and I would have been called out (negatively, as usual), even if I didn't post here.

I don't know about that part. As far as I know they haven't changed the written test and it has something like a 55% pass rate. If you don't pass the test you don't do the rest of the interview.

Don't forget the sim ride during the interview.

AFAIK PSA doesn't require anyone pay anything to attend their training. In fact, they (gasp!!) pay you and provide hotel rooms.

Good try though. Keep on, keepin' on.

Word here is that PCL could go to this instead of the 3500TT/500 in type requirement. In just a few months, we could be running low on FOs with the required mins to upgrade. As it is right now, we can't (physically CAN'T) upgrade any faster. We don't have any more classroom space, but the big kicker is the lack of sim time. We've got guys going to DEN, STL, CLT and possibly YUL just to get sim time to come back to MEM and take a checkride. It's not even summer yet! We're getting the last 2 CRJs in the next couple of months (so much for NWA yanking them if they're still giving us more), and the crazy thing is if we had more pilots, NWA would give us MORE flying! As it is, management is having to say "Uh....we don't have the staffing for that." We're not feeling the FO crunch yet, but the class sizes they want are no where near what we're getting, so it's coming.

I applied at PSA about a year and a half ago with 900/200. I was told to re-apply when I had 1000/500 or a CRJ type rating.....

What's AFAIK mean?

Yes, PSA doesn't require anyone to pay during training (nor does Pinnacle). Yes, PSA pays you and provides you a hotel room (so does Pinnacle).

But Jet U has a program with Pinnacle. Jet U doesn't dictate that you'll be paying to attend Pinnacle's training, nor does it dictate that Pinnacle won't pay you hotel or pay during training.

All Jet U does is get you to Pinnacle with a C/I/ME.

I guess I fail to the see the parallel you're trying to draw.

But now with minimums so low at PSA, it begs the question, what would be better:

A off the street hire, 250 hr fresh C/I/ME wet ink, and no prior jet course, or

A 250 hr C/I/ME we ink but with a full 13 week transition course from Jet U.

Frankly, more hours would be better, but suddenly it turns out no one wants to invest $50-$100k in flight training to land a job paying $20k. Shocking, it is. Reality, we face.
