remember the post about the dead capt on CAL flight

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't Steps 1 and 2 on the "Captain's Dead" checklist: "Move captain out of seat." "Take your 'proper' seat. Congrats on the upgrade, Captain!" ;)

Right between "pull that bonehead out of my seat" and "Dude, I'm so logging this"

Not knocking you, just not my thing. Those flight sims are too tedious for my taste. You have to download a cockpit panel, then engine noise, outside window view,AI planes, etc, etc.

I have better things to do?

heh... the one I mention is all included

but like I said, whatever floats or boat (or in our case, whatever gives lift to your plane lol)

:) I fly them like once a week if that

...it's cheaper to rent? :)

S'actly.

You know you're ready for "upgrade" or a different aircraft when you find most of your captains either a bother or a necessary evil.

That's great, but as I stated earlier, I (and all of my classmates) was a LUMP on my first OE leg, despite the fact that we had JUST been SIC-typed. There are too many peripheral distractions that you're not aware of yet.

Where I have the advantage though is by spending my hours in the sims at suthernjets international doing the training I had to do. I am not saying I would be perfect by any means but the fact that I am familiar with cockpit setup on the fleet would be an advantage over just some PPL guy from the back with 55 hours.

I think you guys think you are all too good... remember one of the first things you learned when you were getting your PPL? the hazardous character thingies? thinking you are too good, and telling yourself 'I can do it' and such? Don't ever be too sure.... the plane is rated for 2 pilots for a reason... its not because if one pilot passes out, the other one is there... that 2nd person can help alot, even just telling him 'look i'm gunna be doing 2 ppl's job right now, so I need you to look out for traffic for me' could help a ton

Else I've got to teach a private pilot what the call sign is, who to talk to, how to change the radio frequency.........

This is a very hot subject. Depending upon where the PPL trained and flies, some of this may already be familiar to the poor little PPL. Training someplace that is a busy Class C (TUS, ONT) gives some familiarity to things the "big boys" know. A PPL is never an equal replacement for the "real thing" but may provide a minimum of useful help. I likely would be better at the CPR part than the FO part. Contains some :sarcasm: .

What's wrong with having a guy with some flying experience read the checklists and look for traffic in this situation?

I've already got most of 'em memorized (by accident) and the only three things that honestly matter on the mad dog are gear down, flaps 28/40 and arming those darned spoilers! :)

I'm not sure what tasks I'd delegate to a private pilot in the cockpit. Most of the things like flap lever or perhaps even the gear handle are just easier to deploy myself than explain to someone "Well, take your left hand, you'll feel two two levers underneath the handle, pull that up, slide it back so the slats deploy." It think it'll be easier to make my own configuration changes.

Most of the communications and medical coordination will probably be handled "single freq" with approach and tower.

Even still since it's an emergency you are usually cleared to land and all traffic is cleared from around very soon after you've declared the emergency.

Why not leave the anet stuff over there?

I always thought it was kind of rude to stand off to the side, point fingers and laugh at people behind their backs.

Wouldn't it be "macho" of a private pilot though to think he has a place in a 757?

he doesnt have a place... but help never hurts

but again, some say that help might turn into more headaches...

plus how was it macho of him to help? he was asked to help... he didnt knock on the door and say give room! i'm a cessna 152 pilot! I will aid in the landing of this aeroplane!

it says FO asked if anyone was a pilot and if coudl help, and he raised his hand....
