remember the post about the dead capt on CAL flight

Thinking about my last leg, the only thing you really honestly needed someone in the left seat for is to use the tiller to get to the gate.

Most of the other medical emergency stuff you can relay through ATC.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't Steps 1 and 2 on the "Captain's Dead" checklist: "Move captain out of seat." "Take your 'proper' seat. Congrats on the upgrade, Captain!" ;)

ACARS is used to get runway landing data and ref speeds.

As far as needed the CA to taxi the airplane... as long as I don't need to make any hard 90 degree or more turns I can get to the gate on rudders only. Tiller works better through.

No speed cards!??! I'm jealous.

interesting... I enver knew u needed ACARS to get the v speeds and runway data, I thought that runway data was included in the AIRAC and the vref speeds were all computed by the FMC (weight of plane etc) I thought ACARS was only for like maintance, weather reporting, and FDAMS stuff...

Depends on the aircraft and the operator.

The ACARS might be used to obtain ATIS, but the landing reference speeds woud be generated automatically and displayed on the speed tape of the Primary Flight Display.

What's wrong with having a guy with some flying experience read the checklists and look for traffic in this situation?

I see... in my case it would be boeings since I know them best... I really don't know how otehr FMC systems work like say airbus or md

what do you fly?

at our company, the ACARS will send us the landing weights, tailwind component, temp, and any MELs that would affect landing distance and then I will look up the corresponding speed card and bug the speeds.

C172

the FMC is rather complex with it, I don't think I could really explain it :(

no, when I mean know the best, I just know it from a friend who is a miami air pilot.... and from FS knowledge... obviously when I say the most, I mean most to my own knowledge. Its nothing compared to a pilot...

"What's wrong with having a guy with some flying experience read the checklists and look for traffic in this situation"

Why bother? There's no reason for it and I wouldn't need the distraction. Who knows what the guy would do or what he's thinking.

Okay...what was that video about??? Was that a video game or something? At first I thought it was MS flight sim 2004. But the controller and other airplane traffic voices were real and not computerized.

Edit: Checked and it is something called Vatsim?. How do you become a controller on the sim and how do you know who your contolling when you log in? And what was an AA 767-300 doing in Atlanta?

It seems like a big online video game and I'm not a fan of flight sims...I have a life!

But it seemed...cool!

what do you mean what he's thinking? like what if he just pulls on the yoke for ####s and giggle?

"The only thing I want you to do is talk on the radio when I tell you to do it and I want you to say exactly what I tell you to. Oh yeah, and drop the gear when I tell you to. You're my gear and radio bitch. Got it?" :D

its called vatsim like you said... the plane is a level d sim 767... to be a controller there you have to go through some training with the senior controllers who are mostly real life controllers... you would use a program called ASRC... and you have your own airspace to work with... you can be tower, app, delivery, arr w/e

http://www.avsim.com/pages/0702/asrc/asrc_preview.html

and the program itself

http://www.asrc.info/

I have the Level D 767. That program is ridiculously detailed. I heard many real life pilots use it to practice during ground school and re currency training. I know I would. Doug, you should look into it, put it on your lab top or something

I had my 738 pilot friend check it out, he really liked it... he said everythign pretty much was modeled in

i figured I would get the response I would here because the second they hear FS 2004, they laugh at it.... that lds 767 is crazy detailed... I wish I was going to the meet, I would bring a laptop and have doug check it out, (or de727ups)

Yea...I have a life. But sounds neat for a gamer!

Yup. Maybe he'll attack you because he's mentally unstable. Or maybe he won't shut up about how much he loves airliners.net and distract you. Or maybe he'll jump up and down screaming like a chimpanzee. Who knows how a completely untrained passenger is going to respond in that situation? Not something I'd want to gamble on.

I dont think any airline pilot would have much trouble doing everything by his/herself, plus having some joe shmoe private pilot up front is a security risk I would think. It would be no different then having a regular passenger come up to read checklists.

I used to play flight simulators before I started flying for real, but now they are insanely boring to me. I had some of those "ultra realistic" addons for MS sim, and somehow they took the fun out of the game for me.

the more I fly, the less interested I get in flight simulator too actually...

that I have to admit, I do play them time to time... but I don't remember doing a nice long flight like I used to for a very long time now...

just imagining a passenger going nuts in the cockpit making monkey noises and trying to lick his armpits is making me laugh rather hard :D

so you can't play a game for an hour in your busy life

whatever floats your boat :)

i'm sure you are a verrryyy busy person being 19 and all :)

Not knocking you, just not my thing. Those flight sims are too tedious for my taste. You have to download a cockpit panel, then engine noise, outside window view,AI planes, etc, etc.

I have better things to do?
