Good News, Bad News

Well AMF is a good company overall so if you want to work here go for it.

But I do have a suggestion, if you do get BUR I guarentee you that you will be TDY for a while and won't have as high living costs as compared to paying rent. But I know we are short in OAK so who knows where they will stick you.

Also I know there is a standing bid for a PA-31 Captain in Jackson, MS. So cost of living wouldn't be nearly as bad as it would in the bay area. You are commited there for 6 months. Then you could transfer to DFW for turbine spot.

But yeah that definately sounds tough, the pay will be horrid while you are training but if you do come to BIGS, I'm usually on reserve in the pilots lounge in the afternoon. Come and find me, my name is Tyler and I'll give you the scoop on the training dept, as I am good friends with most of the training Capts and I myself with be in the 99 training dept soon.
 
This may sound really out there, but if you can I'd put in for BIL. It's really not that bad, plus I've heard you can get into the BE99's in like three months or less there because that's basically all they have and nobody wants to live there because it's not a huge city. Plus, cost of living is a lot less, and it's a large enough metro area that you can get just about anything you want. It's really not that bad.

Well, at XJT I got a per diem check for almost $1,500 to start with and they are putting me up at a hotel for the duration of training. They also gave me the Jepps. The uniform kicked me square in the nuts for a few hundred bucks but there is a uniform allowance. The company has taken care of us big time. We were positive-spaced home last weekend as well as this weekend for Christmas. On Friday I sat in first class on a Continental flight to O'Hare, and then rode a CTA train and bus to my sister's place afterward :insane:.

I'll make the same $20,000 the first year, but year two should go up over 30. Current upgrades are 2 years, subject to increase of course. And everyone knows about the 69 jets..... They're hiring a shload of pilots; we'll see what happens.

6 month turbine upgrade at AMF, say 6-12 months after that and you're in the Metro making $40,00-$50,000 a year.

But at XJT you'll get to fly a shiny jet! J/K! 12-18 months, turbine PIC and 40-50K--not too bad. But like I said, there's folks around here starting month 24, 25, or 26 at 57K plus per diem getting turbine PIC too.

It's all about what risks you want to take and what lifestyle you're looking for.

Word, I enjoy being in my own bed every night and I like the fact that my first jet is more likely to be a Southwest 737 than an RJ.

And my company hasn't furloughed in 35 years and the paychecks keep coming, so I'm happy.

I like knowing that if things go well with the company, my pay will end up pushing 100K a year and I could retire here if I wanted to. I may never have to go to another job interview again.

i remember you saying that you lived in the Bayarea a while back. Do you think you can make a living on Amflt income in the Bay? He is travelling thousands of miles to come out here and work for an "ok" cargo company. Personally, the Regional life will be better than than Amflt. Unless you have good contacts here where you can stay until you stablize- i tell you it will be really tough.

I was born and raised in The City & County of San Francisco. I lived there until I was 18 years old. My father made less than a first-year AMF guy makes, and raised 4 kids.

Was life pretty? No. Can it be done? I don't know . . . maybe.

BTW, you mentioned an "OK" cargo company . . . what's a "good" cargo company? ;)

Personally, the Regional life will be better than than Amflt. Unless you have good contacts here where you can stay until you stablize- i tell you it will be really tough.

It's pretty much really tough no matter what you do. It could be worse, though!

Is your credit good? I hate to say this, but ask for the limit to be raised, put what you can on it, and ASAP get it paid back down. Asking for the increase now with your current job will be better then in a month when at a new one.

Let the AMF correct me here, but isnt this something you could talk to them about. Not sure if it would be the CP or HR, but they might assist somehow, including maybe a relocation credit to be held from your check for the next 6 months.

Is there a training contract at AMF?
