SKW pay proposal

This isn't a tentative agreement. This is a pay raise with a vote that attempts to keep unions at bay. If we voted no then this is what would have happened. Either 1) the union gets voted in and we fly the -700/900 for 50 seat compensation during the 2-4 years it takes to negotiate a contract, or 2) the union doesn't get voted in and managment refuses to talk about pay for ANOTHER X years.

Personally I'm more affraid that option 3 will win. Vote in this rediculous "raise" and vote to keep ALPA out. I'll wager on it happening now. Unfortunately it seems the younger guys at SKYW got sold up the river by some of the older guys. If I were a Brasilia guy I would be livid.

Not only did the newbies get sold under the river, but those same newbies don't give a rats ass about any of whats happening, so I guess in a way, it serves them right? Huh? Just kinda sucks that the others who do give a hoot are on the same sinking ship.

I'm certain that many "newbies" care about the state of affairs at SkyWest. I will tell you that many of them don't feel secure enough to talk to anyone they don't know from ground school or freinds about ANY controversial issue . . . let alone something that can bring out such vitriolic resposes such as those being tossed about over ALPA and the pay raise.

There is no middle ground or safe place to stand as far as they can see, and so they just button their lip and let those that have more security in their position take the stand. Additionally, if you consider the 80% 20% rule, 20% of people are movers and shakers, willing to take the risk and the other 80% are willing to go along for the ride. Please try to remember that it is much easier for someone who is building their PIC Turbine time towards the next gig to speak out ,vs. someone who just wants to get along, make Captain and move along.

I understand your argument, Dale, but based on my conversations with newbies (many of whom are friends who have no problem talking with me), I have to side with Omar, here. Most newbies are so excited to be at the airlines, and they've got it so much better than their instructing gig that they like things the way they are. They have little to no concept of the history behind negotiations.

Most newbies at Skywest have come from other 121 carriers, so most do have a concept of union negotiations. Most of them are excited to be at a airline that is so much better than their former, and because of this many newbies will not vote ALPA in.

This is a really good point. I'm not sure about the EMB, but new hires on the RJ are predominantly from other 121 carriers. From talking to my classmates from Pinnacle, TSA, PSA, Mesa, Eagle, etc, I get the sense that it's hard for people to get fired up about pay issues when things are much better for them at Skywest.

That's why ALPO doesn't let probationary pilots vote.

Makes sense to me. A friend of mine was heavily involved in a Skywest union drive in the late 90's, and he was convinced that the reason ALPA failed was because they didn't focus enough on issues pertinent to the junior guys.

I think almost 20 percent of Skywest's seniority list has been here less than 6 months. I suspect ALPA's getting frustrated by a rapidly growing pilot group populated with disillusioned regional pilots and former CFI's happy to be at an airline.

Im a skyw newbie and I voted double hell no.
But......from what Ive seen recently the last four rj classes, have contained about 2 cfi's per class. The rest are all 121 and military people.

My conclusion is that guys in the bases with alot of 700/900's (like ord, den, slc) voted yes to get the overide pay. As for everybody else why are we even talking about this? it's one percent! that is like a .30-65 cent an hour raise....who cares, its PATHETIC to begin with. No shortage of 1000/100 hour kids who are clawing to get in here.

Has your class finished up aircraft flight training yet? I heard a rumor IOE is backed up until the second week of January. :)

They are backed up from what I hear too. My buddy is doing finishing transition right now and just might get the rest of the year off due to the backlog! He is stoked!

I'm at a different company, but I waited just under 6 weeks from the sim checkride to OE. I was nice :D.

We just finished the sim rides, but have the a/c rides left. Ive heard 2-3 weeks to "just stay in the country", but I like your rumor ALOT better. Lets keep our fingers crossed.

With this whole limbo time period we're in, I was wondering exactly how we were going to be paid. According to the policy manual we start making reserve pay on the first day of IOE. However, today's paycheck reveals that we start making reserve guarantee on the day of the aircraft training. So yay for the extra 15 hours, because now I can once again live the Miller High Life! :D

Where? Skyway? CommutAir? Not mad at you, this is a message to all, but if your not getting into this profession to keep the bar high, then don't apply. We have enough kool aid drinkers as it is.

In my class the 121 guys came from ASA, Horizon Air, Air Wisconsin, Colgan, Mesa, Great Lakes, Delta, Mesaba, Pinnacle, Island Air, TSA, Scenic Air, and Skyway.
