Just a quick question. When doing the MEI as initial, do you cover pretty much EVERYTHING on the oral portion? or is it just ME specific?
We had a guy bust for lack of TAILWHEEL knowledge at the FSDO.
I hear he can't stop a spin for crap:yeahthat:
My DPE hammered me about tailwheel stuff. Yes, I'm endorsed in a taildragger so maybe that's why, but I don't plan to instruct in the future in one (at least right now...)
He was, really, a • bag... one of those guys that seemed to want to impress me with his "I've made 30,000 landings..." He didn't like it when I said "well, there's always the 30,001st to screw up on..."
Have a look in the CFI-ME PTS under the task table. If you do not have any CFI ratings, you must do the entire CFI oral according to the PTS. The only thing you will not have to do is SE specific items, because that's not in the ME PTS at all. I have some real questions about the examiners that let some of you guys off with only ME stuff. We are talking about an inital CFI certificate no?Just a quick question. When doing the MEI as initial, do you cover pretty much EVERYTHING on the oral portion? or is it just ME specific?

That's fine if they want to discuss SE stuff, but to only cover ME specific items, and skip about 80% of the PTS could mean serious trouble for the DPE if the FSDO found out. Plus, nearly all initial CFI rides are being conducted by the FSDOs now, any you can rest assured that they will not skip a single item in the PTS. I'd say be ready for the entire CFI oral.Yeah, but the examiner has the authority to discuss what he wants about things. They can tell if you have enough of a handle on it based on answers. The focus was on ME, with some SE crap in there for good measure. Plus, in the case of the • bag, he said his gameplan was to kill some SE stuff so that I would use him later that week for my SE...thereby guaranteeing him a bit of job security I suppose...

And that's exactly why I went to AZ to get my initial CFI done. They are one of the last, and the FAA will probably soon put an end to it. They are craking down on DPEs doing initial CFIs all over the country, except AZ for some reason.True, a person needs to study the whole oral. I did.
FSDO maybe mandating it where you are, but here in PHX, they still really don't want anything to do with CFI initals. Talked to a guy from Scottsdale FSDO and was told that. There's no standardization from FSDO to FSDO about this stuff. Each one has it's own local interpretation about everything.

Strange thing (probably not strange...but stranger than I've seen in any other FSDO around the country) is that to talk to a couple of DPE's here they'll tell you about how "we have a professional group and we tell the FSDO what needs to be done here in the area about xxx"
There is a real cliqueish DPE network here, and then there are the other DPE's here that are not part of that clique. As of late, we are using the one's that aren't in the clique because our students get an actual practical test. Not one based on some weird, obscure thing that happened back 50 years ago....but that's for another thread...whch maybe I'll start...
i did my MEI first and we hit it all.... a 3 1/2 hour oral
And TN and MS.
