Today I was supposed to take the FOI written, so I went in and took the test. It took about 20 minutes to complete, 50 questions. If you spend a few minutes reading the AIH and the Gleim you will have no trouble at all. Its really just a matter of knowing their definitions, otherwise its common sense. I scored 96 on that test.

My score and the fact that it only took me 20 minutes spurred me to go ahead and take my Commercial written. I was initially planning on taking it on Saturday. Well to be honest I struggled a bit with it. I should have studied some more before taking this one, and I was quite nervous about the outcome. After an hour and a half I was finished but not very confident. I scored 79 on the comm, so obviously I need to brush up some more before I do the checkride. Looking up the codes for the questions I missed, it looks like Regulations and some of the performance charts are where I need to focus.

Both passing grades and they are out of the way, but I really need to hammer the books on the Commercial again. So I am torn between being happy they are done, and the reality of my less than stelar performance on the commercial.

Why would you take it again? Study the same as you should for a checkride (be ready for a little more in the oral, maybe) but it's all stuff you need to know for the oral anyways. You passed, so who cares how you did.

When doing my CFI, I was originally told since I was teaching at a gov't institution, and had met all the prerequisites for it, I could skip the FOI. That was up until the day before my checkride. Needless to say, I had looked over the material, but didn't really worry about it too much. Well, with 1 hour notice, I took it and passed...with a 70%. My instructor told me (the moron that he was, but that's another story) how hard the oral was going to be, blah, blah, blah. I was done with the oral in record time, according to him. About 2 hours for a CFI initial oral...wow a rough one!:)

Save your money, be ready in case you have a jerk of a DE, and continue on.

Agreed. You'd probly end up with more questions about taking it again than getting a 79.

Its not free the second time. Also I am not that disappointed with it that I want to take it again. I will just make sure I am more than ready for the oral portion.
 
Agreed, if you want to take it again you can but don't feel you have to. Just study your kiester off before the practical and show that you weren't happy with the results and this is what I have done since then.
