Trans-Atlantic Terror Threat Busted

My question is how much is too much? Where do you draw the line between terrorist and passenger? TSA seems to take the stance of "treat everyone as a terrorist and we'll stop something from happening." Me personally, being a suspect everytime I board a flight gets a little old.

As far as the flight crews, if you're IN UNIFORM, you're exempt. Sucks for the guys commuting in the night before. Unless they wear their uniforms, the toothpaste still needs to go underneath.

As far as the release thing, Delta. continental etc. does not fly to BGR but their "Regoinal partners" do. How does a commuting Continental pilot get the expemtion to travel on a XJT flight to work? especially if he is required to show the gate pass? I see how this would be possible at an airport where the airline flies to.

For ease of transportation, I suggest commuting in the uniform and just flashing the badge as you hurriedly pass through...
 
Okay - I'll admit that I have not read this entire thread but would like the follwoing anyway... for those who feel conforming (for a lack of a better word) is okay. Where is it going to stop?

So every time a plot is foiled we will have something taken from our civil liberties and make us (the good people) change our ways? If so terrorism is WINNING!

In addition to the changes since 9/11:

A foiled shoe bomber = we have to take off our shoes now, well I guess we should be happy we are allowed to wear shoes at all.
A foiled liquid attack = no more liquids on planes to include gel, toothpaste and make-up.

The security at a majority of the world's airports is already ridiculous. It's getting to the point where you would be better off driving then flying - especially if the flight is less than 4 hours. Who looses? The airline and the traveling public. If a terrorist wants to blow something up they will - where there's a will there's a way...

The purpose of terrorism is not to kill people, it's to terrorize. The dead are just a byproduct of the real goal which is to influence those who remain to change their lifestyles by putting, well, the fear of god in them.
 
Are you serious? Are you blaming the government because people have to make sure that they don't have explosives in their shoes or in their shampoo?
I don't think it is ridiculous that I have to take off my shoes when the alternative is possiblying being exploded at 40,000ft AGL. If you think I am exagerating, then what made the shoe-bomber get that idea? Would it have worked?
Of course there will always be "holes" in security (TSA's incompetance, being a big one), but that is no reason to just throw up your hands and be like 'Well, since we probably can't realistically stop everyone, lets not even try.'

that's not true, all the tsa asks is that they want those items in checked luggage.
 
As a closet Conservative-Libertarian, of course I am upset at the loss of personal liberty.

Part of me, however, is looking forward to this "reduction in carry on luggage."

Imagine how much quicker the planes will unload when each Jane Doe doesn't have to reach up and find her make up bag!

Has anyone flown in the last few days? Has it made a difference in load, unload?

Not that I don't think security is getting pretty annoying, I cannot agree with you that it is not neccesary.

Also, a 4 hour flight will get me from half way across the country - Austin to Albany. I made that drive in 31 hours once. No way in hell is it better to drive it! Now, A flight from Syracuse NY to Manchester NH, because it would go to Newark or some hub first, would probably be better to take the 5 hour drive.
 
To the complaints about the long waits at security.... I am not sure where you guys are flying out of (I can only speak to my experience), but security is not horrendously long if you are prepped at all. I can go to OHare 2 hours before a flight, check my bags, get a ticket, go through security, and end up at the gate with plenty of time to spare.
To put this into perspective, how long does it take you to fly?
-check weather
-get plane out (or check out if renting)
-add fuel, oil, etc.
-thorough pre-flight
I am not saying these two things are the same at all, but you are willing to go through steps to fly your plane, without complaining about the time. And, you know who you are carrying. (I am aware that airlines have to pre-flight, etc.)
So just consider check-in, security, etc. the steps for an airliner.

Last week I completed a 22 hour flight (Okinawa - Philadelphia), I was at Chicago o'hare in a wheel chair (if anyone has gone through customs there, im sure you know its TONS of fun), went through normal security at every airport, had plenty of time to spare.


Although in light of recent events, I will be pissed I cannot take my MP3 player and PSP with me (carry on) on the long flight back to Okinawa

it's gonna suck major for us girls... no liquid makeup and that stuff is PRICEY too.. I can't imagine the hords of women having a shiznit fit because they have to throw out their makeup and/or expensive perfumes.. whose going to pay us back for that? are they gonna mail it to us - doubtful...:mad:

Okay....

Of all the plots "foiled" do you know how many have been set up by the government?
 
I worked yesterday morning, at EWR. According to one news report, there was a security line that stretched over 600 yards at my airport. People were tired and worried about missing flights, of course, but the overwhelming mood was one of understanding, patience, and even humor. I though this was astounding, especially being in Newark.

What struck me more than anything was how talkative people were in the terminal once they got through security. I couldn't sit down for more than a minute before I was mobbed by people asking questions, and almost none of those questions were security or terror related. It was as though they were trying to burn off the stress of security and terror thread by making idle chit-chat with someone "in uniform". I wasn't the only one to get the treatment-- Almost everyone who was a stationary target with any appearace of authority was getting the same treatment. I did my best to sound relaxed, confident, and humorous, but it seemed like the more I gave the more peope wanted. People are wierd.

JohnT- turn times were about the same, but everyone who was going to carry-on was already at the airport when the fun began, and I only have 50 seats anyway, so it's difficult to judge. There was, of course, a sharp upturn in the number of checked-vs.-gatechecked bags. I would imagine the heavies will load up faster soon, with many people choosing to not carry on, or carry on much less.

Gang, if this is the terrorists way of limiting our freedoms, they are going to loose. Imagine all the planning, coersion, espionage, and carefulness that went into planning this attack. The net result? I have to pack my shampoo in my checked bag. Whoopedie-doo. Even the simplest of military minds can see that this is about the most inefficient cost-benefit campaign in the history of warfare. It's ok. They're not burning the Constitution just yet.
