Trans-Atlantic Terror Threat Busted

I was listening to the radio this morning. Some counter terrorism guy was told by an close source that this was to go down today. Damn who knows, pretty scary stuff. Apparently they were going to blow the aircraft up once they got over U.S soil or over the Atlantic. The target airlines were United, Continental and American. They are still looking for people involved. Close call and good for the authorities for catching this in time. My question is, would if the aircraft were already inflight then Birtish officials contacted the US to let them know there are XX terrorist on United flight XX to LAX?

Uniformed flight crews are exempt, woo!
yea.. but now that means you have to wear your uniform to get to work cuz otherwise, there go your toiletries!! :(

it's gonna suck major for us girls... no liquid makeup and that stuff is PRICEY too.. I can't imagine the hords of women having a shiznit fit because they have to throw out their makeup and/or expensive perfumes.. whose going to pay us back for that? are they gonna mail it to us - doubtful...

besides, doesn't anyone but me see the BIG loophole here?

This crap makes me scared to get into this industry. I think we need a pay raise to compensate for the fear of some nut job blowing the plane up. Ridiculous.
I agree.. I think it is putting aviation into the "dangerous job" category even more. except you don't get paid "danger" salary....:(

Does that include while commuting?? or just "working" crewmembers?

Commuting as well - my company is urging people commuting to commute in uniform.

********EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY**********

Effective today, the US Department of Homeland Security issued the following travel changes:

No liquids or gels are permitted to enter the sterile area through the screening checkpoint or be in accessible property or on one's person except:
  • Baby formula, breast milk
  • Prescription medicine with a name that matches the passenger's ticket
  • Insulin and essential other non-prescription medicines
Prohibited carry-on items include: beverages, shampoo, suntan lotion, creams, toothpaste, hair gel, and other items of similar consistency. These items may be transported in checked bags.

Beverages purchased in the sterile area must be consumed before boarding the aircraft.

Crewmembers in uniform are exempt from the security directive's restrictions to carry-on items at the security checkpoint; however, crewmembers are not exempt from the restriction of carrying beverages onboard the aircraft.

Looks like folks will just have to check their toiletries from now on. It'll suck, but that's the way the ball bounces. It'd suck worse to get your ass blown out of the sky for the sake of convenience, no?

Ooh my god.

Here goes the ridiculous paranoia police.

This country is becoming more and more ridiculous everyday.

Sure, let's not install explosive detecting screens. That way we can make air travel as uncomfortable as possible, the largest pain in the ass ever, not like they are going to go back to Greyhound or Amtrak.

RIDICULOUS

Beverages that are purchased in the sterile area must be consumed prior to boarding the airplane.

HAHAHAH HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA What a fkn joke.

I just love how the DHS never wants to fix the problem, they just want to make it more painful for us to live our lives. Like this is a fix? Please. Christ. . . get on the phone people and call your fkn representatives and figure out what the hell sort of knee jerk response this is, how long it is going to last, etc.

Some TSA groups like to interpret "crewmwmber" as "working Crewmember". That combined with that offline jumpseaters must have a security pass to get to the gate would make it very easy for some of them to get rid of commuting crewmembers stuff. Cause we all know they get their jollies out of harassing pilots.

Amen. Fix the problem, don't just try to make us feel safe. What's to stop somebody from putting a timing device on these explosives when they're checked? Heck I think I saw it on Mcguyver once!

We were informed to contact our Chief Pilot's office ASAP should the TSA harass any uniformed crew. No mention of "working crew". Apparently the TSA is being instructed NOT to screw with uniformed crewmembers. Word will spread slow, though.

Why dont you watch the news. The substance they were going to us could be hidden in liquids and could not be detected by our explosives detection systems.

Your point?

We put a damn man on the moon. We can't protect our citizens? We are not ignorant individuals. We have brains, we have killer electronics.

USE THEM FOR CHRIST SAKES.

Don't paint everyone black because of a couple nutjobs. This is ridiculous, and it has to stop.

crewmembers are not exempt from the restriction of carrying beverages onboard the aircraft.

Well ... crewmember sick calls are about to increase. Onboard coffe? How cruel.

This is just another knee-jerk reaction. If people had know about this "and saw it coming" why wasn't something implemented before the supposed plot almost happened? INstead our "security" experts wait until the plot is almost pulled off and then start rushing out "immediate" changes in policy without so much as thinking about the effectiveness of such changes.

I also looooooove and the whole "prescription medicine matching the name on the ticket." Apparently bad guys can't get prescriptions now?

Security is only as good as the weakest link and there are FAAAAR weaker links than "beverages" through security.

Besides, if I remember correctly didn't they try the whole no liquid thing at the very beginning. I remember countless cases of the TSA forcing people to drink all kinds of wierd things -- here we go again!

Again, what's the difference between this crap blowing up in 9D as opposed to under 13C?

Trust me, I'm no fan of the TSA.

However, what the DHS head was saying was that until they can do some further analysis and figure out how to catch liquids like nitro-glycerin during the security check, and see how exactly these things were going to be detonated, they need these temporary measures.

Its good in a way. People won't pretend to be stupid and bring carry on bags (which a 1st grader would know can't possibly fit in the overhead) and try to shove it in repeatidly and then look at the FA for help.

I agree though that a lot of times, there is a kneejerk reaction which can cause major issues. I had a chance to visit the FAA command Center in northern virginia yesterday afternoon. During the walkaround, I noticed that things were very quiet (no bad weather to deal with). But as soon as the delays due to increased security start, the traffic flow management people get to work! I bet that room is packed today!

So then by your logic, no one should be able to carry around bottles of water out in public.

Do you not see how ridiculous this is? We need sound intelligence BEFORE these nutjobs get to the airports.

If the system fails (9/11), then our government needs to accept some sort of responsibility. Don't expect that with Cowboy Bush in offices.
