The problem with education is the futher away from an event, the less emotional baggage younger people carry into it.
So the big joke in my culture was that MLK day would eventually be a “Come pick up your new F250 during MLK weekend, do your barbecues in style with the rugged Ford F250…”
So you and I carry reverence for 9/11, but the person who basically posted a spat-out generative AI result probably either wasn’t alive or was wrecking diapers around the time of 9/11. We’re all aghast, but to Gen Z and younger, it’s not that big of a deal.
We do a crappy job at teaching history in America. Meanwhile, the funny expressions people have when I tell them that my great grandfather was owned and didn’t have freedom until he was six.

Was just talking about this with a friend. Despite a few recent long overnights in NYC I’ve never gone down to ground zero. Not because I don’t want to, but I’m still at the point where I’d probably get within site of it and collapse sobbing uncontrollably.
I had an FO one year at SkyWheezy who one night while we were on a trip went out for drinks. It was close to 9/11 (or maybe even on the day) and there were clips from it on the news. He says something to me about watching a documentary on it and I’ve already disassociated from seeing the clip and keeps bringing it up no matter how many times I change the subject. Finally I break down and literally walk him damned near minute by minute of that day from the instant my friend Stephen called me and told me to turn on the news, to watching the second plane crash into the tower, and so on. Eventually somewhere around my telling him the mood when I walked into work at the airport somewhere around day four of the shutdown he finally stopped me to tell me that he was three when it happened and had no idea how it affected people.
Yeah, like that… or something.
I was stuck in BOS for a week. Whenever they were after OBL's brother, or cousin or whatever, I could hear the sirens out of my window and literally watch it on the national news.
I had a friend that was one of the murdered pilots and the way we made a cartoon out of the event that lead to his death just taught me all I needed to know.
America will largely resort to 9/11 mattress sales, happy hour specials and "Come on down to your local (Genpop auto dealership) for an attractive offer during our 'Crazy 911 Days' sell-a-thon" and go bomb brown people.

If we truly resorted to teaching history in this country that would mean acknowledging A LOT of atrocities. Instead society just puts lipstick on our heinous past and resort to celebrations on some days under the guise of patriotism, acceptance or whatever they spin it as.
