WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy announced today the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is issuing a new mandatory “Operations Specification” (OpSpec) requiring all commercial airlines to formally commit to merit-based hiring for pilots.

While the FAA has raised performance standards, dismantled DEI offices and contracts, and revised absurd Biden-Buttigieg era directives that wasted time renaming cockpits to flight decks, allegations of airlines hiring based on race and sex remain. Under this new mandate, all U.S. carriers will be required to certify that this practice is terminated. Failure to do so will subject airlines to federal investigation.

“When families board their aircraft, they should fly with confidence knowing the pilot behind the controls is the best of the best. The American people don’t care what their pilot looks like or their gender—they just care that they are most qualified man or woman for the job,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy. “Safety drives everything we do, and this commonsense measure will increase transparency between passengers and airlines.”

This action is in accordance with President Donald J. Trump’s Executive Order on Ending Illegal Discrimination and Restoring Merit-Based Opportunity and his Presidential Action on Keeping Americans Safe in Aviation.

“At the FAA, the safety of passengers is our number one priority,” said FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford. “It is a bare minimum expectation for airlines to hire the most qualified individual when making someone responsible for hundreds of lives at a time. Someone’s race, sex, or creed, has nothing to do with their ability to fly and land aircraft safely.”

Additional Information:

The FAA is authorized to prescribe minimum safety standards for air carriers under 49 U.S. Code § 44701(b) and (d).

In accordance with regulations, this OpSpec acknowledges the importance of merit-based hiring that requires airlines to identify candidates whose specific experience and technical aptitude align with the complexities of their specific operating environment.

Operational safety of air carriers is fundamentally dependent upon the knowledge and proficiency of its flight crewmembers. Federal regulations establish rigorous training and qualification standards. The effectiveness of these training programs is enhanced when new-hire pilot applicants enter training possessing a verified baseline of technical knowledge, cognitive skills, and piloting qualifications and experience.

I mean, do they think pilats are the only employees an airline hires that lays-hands on that aircraft they want families to board confidently?

Is this actually an opening salvo for anti-union merit-based employment from Ole. Bryan "I Didn't Divest My Airline Holdings" Bedford?

I believe that it was more conveniently brought out to pivot the discussion away from the purse fight between the FAA and DHS over the airspace closers in El Paso. The airlines have no way of showing hiring is merit based and a couple have already publicly announced that DEI hiring will continue despite government bullying.

I assumed that being FAA certificated, as well as the 1500-hour road rules were merit-based hiring criteria.

So I suspect you are correct.

I mean my recent class at a legacy had 57 people and only 1 person wasn’t a white dude. Pretty sure we should launch a full investigation into that guys history to make sure he didn’t take someone’s hard earned job…

But that’s the point though.

How can you take half of your requirement newhires, from a group that is only 15% of the entire pilot population? Scenario A

You can easily fill half of your requirement newhires from 85% of the entire pilot pool. Scenario B

In scenario B, you can be selective and weed out many based on failures, past history, etc. But with scenario A, you need to fill half your classes from this group and since it’s only 15% of the pilot population, you have no choice but to take the bottom barrels too.

The math isn’t mathing.

Actually, I read your post wrong. With only 1 out of 57 not white, that is still below the ~15% of the representative population you would expect to see if it was random assignment.

So I take back the first sentence of “but that’s the point though.” Ignore that sentence.

Darnit! You mean I have to throw away my special Practical Test Standards and remove the "are you a black?" question on the application that was never there?

I'm sorry but the dude with the multiple checkride failures, firings and about 1500 hours will have to figure out why he isn't getting called by United instead of blaming DEI.

Such a self-own. Morons.

I mean why are we even interviewing anymore? Forget about if this guy is a good fit, just let the computer spit out the top 50 applicants based on TT and we will put them in class. I’m sure that’s going to go great.

If I had a dime for every time I've heard "My friend is a good guy, he's got 7000 hours and no one will call him" when I ask "Have you seen his application?" "No, but he's got 7000 hours" I'd be a millionaire.

Imagine if we hired financial advisors like the uninformed want us to hire pilots.

"Jimmy has been a financial advisor for 15 years, Fidelity HR is terrible, they won't hire him!!"

"Has Jimmy shared with you how much money he's lost the institutions he's been working for? Oh he HASN'T? Oh yeah, DEI or something that's the ticket."

Utterly ridiculous. I don’t know how to explain this to a certain group of angry people who just want to make themselves feel miserable about things they don’t know.
DEI is/was not about giving non-white males a job and cutting the line. It was about giving certain individuals the information and guidance on how to get into certain fields that they might not know they could possibly achieve. No one is asking to jump ahead. They are asking where to start.
