DTW baggage check crash

what is interesting is all the barriers to prevent a car from driving into the terminal failed easily. seemed to be there for show only. TMK those things are there to prevent exactly what happened.

In other news I have the same issue with newer FO's. No personality, don't want to talk, don't know any of the classic movies and slam click. They carry a giant ass softside yetti cooler...
Slam clicking seems to be an all bases all seats thing.

Took a relatively new guy out to eat recently on two of our overnights. Bought dinner both times. He couldn’t believe I was willing to do that, and how he schlepped meals to save money. Had to explain that we get paid almost $80/day to eat and that he doesn’t have to live off Cliff bars and airplane snacks anymore. I know an FO with dietary restrictions and I totally get carrying food for health reasons. But yeesh, eat something please. I don’t want FOs passing out from starvation, too much paperwork!

I saw a lot of that domestic.

Spend your per diem. At our income level, if you’re financially struggling, well, see you on the Caleb Hammer podcast.

I’m about 50-50.

I’m an ambivert so after a long flight I honestly just want to wander around and be alone for a while, unless you’re super interesting and you’re also a wanderer. But the last thing I want to do is sit at an expat bar and talk about work or go have some safe, gentrified experience in a foreign country.

If I hear one more time, “Where’s a good place for gyoza?” in Tokyo, it’ll be too soon.

Princess Bride is one of those movies that no matter how many times you’ve seen it, no matter what else you have to do, if you come across it, you stop and watch it to the end.
I know you all think I hate all liberals but the fact that I consider Rob Reiner in very high regard is proof enough in my head that I'm not a bigot. We lost a great film maker. You just can't deny the talent. When Reiner was killed I watched a couple documentaries about the making of The Princess Bride and it only reaffirmed my admiration for him. This is the apparent difference between the current political division in this country, one side wants anyone who disagrees with them to be canceled and unemployable, the other side appreciates the talent and just moves on with their life. I also think James Woods is a great actor but everyone here hates him, not because of his work but because of the things he says. This attempt to "clean" up the zeitgeist to suit the narrative is backfiring. Creativity has been effectively stifled and all you'll get is bland nonsense.

I just want someone else to go look at dinosaur fossils on a layover

I’ll be honest, layovers for me are a utility. 9 hours sleep, hot (very) shower and a meal or two.

If I’m deposited in a place long enough where there is time for some ancillary activity, I guarantee the number of people who should share my, ah, eclectic tastes is probably quite low. We’re talking out past 3-4 standard deviations. Non-zero, I grant you, but when I say “I’m going to visit this antique model railroad shop”, people are frantic to come up with any possible excuse, so I save them the effort.

Most are focused on the sportsball anyway, and yea, that’s a hard no.

I always make an open nvitation to the crew (and on long haul we are talking about 11 other people most days) to tag along on whatever odd side quest I'm planning for the layover. I think in the past 5 years I've had 1 trip where the other 2 pilots, and 2 of the FAs went... and that was for some frozen sportsball at the Garden in Boston. Every other time I just get glazed over stares.

I was in Seoul and the pilots I was working with were trying to coordinate something for the next day.

I said I was basically planning on taking the subway over to Gwangjang Market and basically eating some unindentifiable food from scary-looking places.

“LOL, but really…”

“Yes, really”

So does “odd side quest”.

Last time I was there I have no idea what I ate, but it was really good (and it was REALLY cold outside).

And sometimes @derg will go to a Mexican place in Korea because the people he is eating with can't handle the MSG.

One of my things to do on overnights is in fact…visit hobby shops, of all sorts. Sadly the interweebs and e-commerce have not been kind to the sort of small businesses that most hobby shops are. Really there aren’t many anymore, especially in the sort of urban areas we end up in. The rent is too damned high…

Most towns have a Warhammer shop, usually kinda small and full of eye-wateringly expensive minis. I will say they are by far the most likely to have some sort of gaming going on.

Other gaming shops, they vary widely. For most, one visit is enough. The Orc’s Nest in London is worth a visit, it is tiny though.

Most towns do have model trains, though many are in what could be more accurately described as toy stores. RC, they seem theses days to be mostly drones and cars. I’ve seen a few good plastic model shops.

I did find a wild toy soldier store right by the Louve, it could be rightly described as a museum in its own right.

Nothing compares to Akihabara in Tokyo, they have everything, likely in more than one shop. Nerd heaven…

For a good friend like you, I’d do it again!

For a random crew member who spent a sixteen hour flight telling me about his ex-wives, boats, how come I don’t golf in Scottsdale and how he thinks he’s ‘poor’, nah.

I love to try local cuisines when I go to other countries. I use YouTube and apps like World of Mouth or Food Spotting. 99% of the time I am by myself and that is a okay with me. You go on and enjoy your Marriott burger.

So WH40K is maddenly expensive, and GW is about as uptight as you can possibly imagine about their IP. So I don’t do tabletop, but the lore is so dark and over the top horrible it’s like a dumpster fire…you can’t help but look.

BTech is so much more reasonable and the lore far more accessible, and the fandom not nearly as insufferable, plus has an 80’s vibe that is just delicious and totally my jam. Plus, stompy stompy giant robots. And for $25, I can have my very own Urbie Derby. I’ve heard the MW5 virtual reality mod is off the charts good, so I may have to try that with the new rig.

Seriously. WH40k fans be like “well, ekctually…” and BTech fans “here, let me pour you another whisky”.

SO says I can smell model train shops from miles away.
