A320 grounding

Wasn’t a nothing burger for the JetBlue crew. Heard they lost over 10k before they recovered it.

"Operationally".

We can't bring back the 10K of altitude loss nor do I know much about that -- I'm kind of DCW-style "Vulcan" when it comes to corrective actions.

However, "the fix" appears not to be a global thermonuclear meltdown. I apologize for not being more limbs akimbo.

And I make this as a fan of the Airbus 320 series, even.

While all software may be made to behave unexpectedly, you don’t want to see that from real-time, aerospace applications, etc.

Unfortunately in aviation nothing will ever be done quietly again. Given the intense focus on flight number tracking, accident armchairing and even landing commentary (yes Patrick) everything is sensational. It's exhausting.

Sextant?! We just headed WEST until people stopped dying on the trip back! :)

There is a story about a captain here in the L1011 days who insisted his IRS data was correct, despite the FO and FE telling him the other IRSs were probably correct and his was wrong. They ended up about 200 miles north of Hawaii, not understanding why there was no airport in front of them. Fortunately, even though they were out of radio range, radar picked them up and was able to send a pair of HIANG F4s to go bring them back before they ran out of gas.

This is where I will show myself to be a complete dumbass, not a professional pilot, and someone with no competence on big planes and thinks things like nosewheels, electrical systems, and starters are "technologically advanced airplanes".

But the idea of a large airplane being grounded and turned into a paperweight honest to God creeps me out worse than something like metal fatigue and nacelles flying off. And I'm not joking. My paranoia about technology is stupid and I get it. I'm open to new information from sources other than my antique airplane groups (and Daily Mail) - but that's where I'm at now.

The FAA doesn’t technically need to issue a an AD, as the country of orgin of the type certificates AD is recognized by the FAA. So if EASA says it’s grounded it’s grounded.

Likewise, if the FAA says all Max 737s are grounded, then they are all grounded over in EASA land as well.

Further, no airline is going to take on that liability. In the US at least…

For the record, AA says they’ll be fixed by tonight or tomorrow. 340 in their fleet affected. United says zero…
After all these years learned something new tonight!

There was an old TWA Navigator that used to be on Connie's that was going to teach a couple of us celestial navigation but he went on Hospice the week after we first got together.

It’s not that hard to teach yourself. I started with standard noon latitude fixes. Moved on to tracking the sun over the day to get a position fix on a plotting chart. Then I was able to get a fix from stars and planets. The moon presented a lot of math I couldn’t figure out and no one was there to help. Also between the sun stars and planets it was easy to keep plots going well enough to keep my position sorted to within about 5 NM.

I will put it on my list of things to do. Now that I am out of the metroplex and no longer have light pollution I can also see stars again!

For a scientific look into this that anyone can understand check this video out. It answers exactly what happened here and starts off with the first time this happened on an airbus. 24 million views and it’s excellent.

Like I tell some of my OE pilots… dare I call them “students” and get slapped by my lead… “This is why we check our OEB’s, TAB’s and ACS’s, amarite?” :)

A little birdie thats that it’s only a portion of the overall 320s and a 60-90 minute software update. It literally takes longer to change-out a display screen.
Shhh you’re ruining this for the news outlets. The Airbus (which one) is grounded and holiday travel back home is going to be a nightmare this weekend.

Side note; did someone complain about being called a student at some point?

Whelp.... at this time we have four fleet launch a/c not ready to depart due to the ELAC. Not sure if it's that the work was not completed or failed updates
