Looks like a software glitch is prompting airbus to ground the entire a320 fleet.

It's likely a very specific block of A32X

Cosmic radiation bit flipping a component is not a new or unknown thing.

You either add redundancy or shield the component.

It's more common the smaller you make the transistors, so newer components will likely be the focus.

Need waaaaaaay more information. Hell, even our 350’s are technically four different subfleets systems-wise.
 
Wonder if the FAA AD will come out after the busy travel weekend (saute me up some crow if it’s already out)

The FAA doesn’t technically need to issue a an AD, as the country of orgin of the type certificates AD is recognized by the FAA. So if EASA says it’s grounded it’s grounded.

Likewise, if the FAA says all Max 737s are grounded, then they are all grounded over in EASA land as well.

Further, no airline is going to take on that liability. In the US at least…

For the record, AA says they’ll be fixed by tonight or tomorrow. 340 in their fleet affected. United says zero…
 
At least all of the DC-10/MD-11 folks and a good portion of the A-319/320/321 folks will get to spend the holidays with their families, you always need to look for the silver lining when a dark cloud shows up.
 
Like I tell some of my OE pilots… dare I call them “students” and get slapped by my lead… “This is why we check our OEB’s, TAB’s and ACS’s, amarite?” :)

A little birdie thats that it’s only a portion of the overall 320s and a 60-90 minute software update. It literally takes longer to change-out a display screen.

So your air line only has Group 1 aeroplanes?

(2) For Group 1 aeroplanes: After modification of the aeroplane as required by paragraph (1) of this AD, do not install an affected ELAC on that aeroplane.
(3) For Group 2 aeroplanes: From the effective date of this AD, do not modify any aeroplane into a Group 1 aeroplane.
 
I haven’t a clue. We have 50 affected airframes and they’ll be updated overnight after they’re done for the day according to flight operations.

A very sensational headline it appears.
 
Updated information from MCC:

Only A-321 are affected.
Approximate 3 hour fix.
All but two of the affected aircraft from the affected fleet have sufficient downtime to complete the update the software without causing a delay.

So far, “nothing burger” and I hope that remains accurate. Also considering the size of the 321 NEO + CEO fleet, it’s really impressive that only two aircraft will incur a delay. Hell, on an average day, there’s probably double that amount that are delayed for tire changes.
 
Aviation Week is pretty detailed. Oldest 1000 subset of the total 6000 aircraft will need the physical ELAC changed, the rest is a software update.

Airbus identified the issue during its probe into an October 30 incident involving a JetBlue A320. The aircraft, en route to Newark from Cancun, suddenly lost altitude while in cruise.

An A320 "recently experienced an uncommanded and limited pitch down event," EASA's EAD said, without identifying the specific flight. "The autopilot remained engaged throughout the event, with a brief and limited loss of altitude, and the rest of the flight was uneventful. Preliminary technical assessment done by Airbus identified a malfunction of the affected ELAC as a possible contributing factor."

Wasn’t a nothing burger for the JetBlue crew. Heard they lost over 10k before they recovered it.
