UPS MD-11 crash at SDF

How does the A330F compare to MD-11? I know it doesn’t get much love in the states but you see them outside doing cargo. I know it’s a larger wingspan than the MD but a good amount less than then the 777.

Not really- it's wingspan is only about 2 feet less than the 777-200.

Until I looked them up last night I hadn't appreciated how much bigger pretty much every widebody (besides the 767-400) introduced after the MD-11 is in wingspan.

I must of failed with the google. I thought it was 25+ feet difference.

The 777F has the 300 wing. So it's about a 40 foot difference.

There's no real comparison, here. The tired excuse that the 321Neo can do 95% or whatever of what the 757 can do is great, except the 5% is a big deal.
The point is that wingspan doesnt give alot of attention, but can make a big deal operationally. For gates and taxiways lined for Group 3 or less operations, which are many!, an extra foot of wingspan could make a huge difference. This seems to be one of the selling points of the MD11.

What’s the length. Md-11 sticks out only so far, again the “wings” at world port.

I mean sounds like stepping over a dollar to pickup penny’s. At some point that logistical/cost nightmare of bulldozing and rebuilding for realistic wingspans has to happen. There is no replacement for the MD, and there never was. Just poor future proofing from the c-suites IMHO.

Honestly, if UPS wants a direct replacement they will be a world of hurt as these planes age. If this isn't what causes MD-11s to get parked permanently something else will. Time for UPS to spend some time and money on new(ish) planes.

Are passengers not getting where they want to go because of that 5%?

It depends. If you're departing from sea level that 5% doesn't matter.

If you're launching from SLC it's a different story.

We make it back to HNL full out of SLC no problem on the 321. Temperature is a bit of an issue but I think we've been pretty unrestricted out of Vegas as well as long as we aren't trying to take off between 10am and 6pm in the summer. But AWA was limited in their ops there with the 757 as well.

Yes and no. There are two issues when it comes to replacing the MD. 1) The wing span. 2) The behind wing cargo door.

The loading wings (at UPS) are setup to utilize aircraft that have the cargo door in front of the wing.

For someone that isn't intimately familiar with cargo ops, is the building/ cargo GSE really built around one make/ model of an airframe? Unless I'm misunderstanding this, and I hope I am, is the operation tailored that specifically to the MD-11 size and shape, with never planning on adapting to the next generation of freighters?
