Landing That First Dispatch Job

Hey friends.

Got my dispatch cert in May. Have been applying to 121 and 135 operators. Have had two interviews with 135's (no offers), and an received an online assessment from a regional. My resume has been revised and I am proactively studying my material as I prepare for more interviews. I know patience is a key factor, and landing that first dispatch job is historically complex....but at what point should I begin to get worried? Any words of advice are welcome.

Would love your input! Thank you

I've had my license for over a year, currently work for an airline (ground ops) and have applied for just about every airline... still don't have my first gig

Unless you work for a major airline already, you may want to look into getting experience at a regional. Some majors hire internally, some don’t. If you do decide to go to a major and try internal, most of the time you won’t need experience but you may have to be in whatever department for a year or so before moving. You will definitely have to have patience. I was at two different majors, didn’t have any experience at the time, but they also weren’t hiring for dispatch when I was there. When they did hire, they hired a few internals, other externals with experience. I left to get experience because the hiring was kinda on ice. I have a year now and it’s just a waiting game. It’s really competitive so keep studying and applying. Your best bet for now may be a regional.

Yep. I'm aware of that and am willing to relocate. A start at a regional would be great!

Years ago it took me a while, about a year. There wasn’t any hiring going on and got so many tbnts. that I I actually stopped applying the regionals and applied to be a ramper. Was a ramper for like half a year , then eventually got picked up. ( I had zero aviation experience at the time , i probably got hired because the MOD was a former ramper lol )

Make sure someone else looks at your resume because I think that helped me out too.

Thanks for sharing! I'm in the interview process as a gate agent with an airline. We'll see how this pans out. I just need a foot in the door. I was honestly getting discouraged thinking something was wrong with me because it's been a couple of months. It seems it can take a bit of time for this to happen, I am OK with that. I did have someone revise my resume, I believe that has been helpful.

no problem, two months is not bad,

U should get hired soon
(in the past five years there’s new airlines popped up like eastern, breeze, avelo, global crossing ,etc.
Also United is still hiring . So the regionals should open up , definitely wasn’t like before there were less opportunities)

Hey, Congrats on obtaining your certificate! Which regionals have you applied to on the 121 side?

Congrats on the certificate. I started with Envoy Air in Dallas. It's an AA subsidiary so you get full American Airlines benefits. But... most
Important thing is that Envoy Air is American Airlines prized possession. They fill about half of their new hire dispatch classes from Envoy. AA has designed Envoy dispatch to mirror their dispatch operation. Envoy uses all of the same programs and software as AA and Envoy actually gets priority interviews for AA. Envoy dispatchers started getting test/interview dates before the posting was even closed. Envoy had 1 week of "Envoy only" test/interviews and best part is that all applicants regardless of time as a dispatcher were given interviews. It's common for AA to hire Envoy dispatchers with 3 - 6 months of experience. If you're looking to get to AA, Envoy is where it's at. It's pretty common for Envoy new hire classes to have dispatchers from other regional airlines because they are trying to get to AA. An AA dispatch hiring manager told me once that if he could only hire from Envoy he would, except they aren't allowed to do that. Envoy was the path I took and I went to AA quickly. Just sharing my path. Good luck!

Ahh amazing path!!! AA would be ideal long term. I wonder when they’ll start hiring again.

When will Envoy hire? Probably next month or so. Especially now that AA has posted, they will take a lot of Envoy dispatchers so Envoy will need to replace them.
AA just posted but they want experience. Good luck!!
