USS Harry S. Truman Collision

Impeccable priorities haha

We had a CAG discharge his combat issue SIG sidearm into a ready room chair when he was fiddling with it before a mission a number of years ago. Don't think he was relieved, but ever since, you can guess the weapon condition we were authorized to fly with it in. Obviously personal technique "varied", to include not obeying that instruction

I actually heard that exact story from Gash two weeks ago talking about dumb senior leaders we’d have to deal with over the years.

Typical dumb response. Pistols are always carried in battery. One person with an AD shouldn’t change that. Personally, wouldn’t have bothered with a SIG in the first place, but you guys have no control over that. Not like the situation we had in OEF 1, first deployment.

Which person of King Neptune’s underlings did you get to play? Did you get to punish the wogs well?

I was a lowly wog when we crossed. Persian Gulf to the coast of Somalia and then crossed enroute to Perth.

Oh! Haha. I had thought you were a cardholder and was one of the enforcers on that crossing! Haha.

Nope. Three years at a ship repair facility in Pearl Harbor and 18 months on the Ranger.

I guess I was fortunate to cross the line as a midshipman. It was on the Kitty Hawk, and I distinctly remember several days on that short "summer cruise" when the ship was dead in the water. I guess nukes are good for something

lol…. “Sh*tty kitty” is how my roommate referred to his ship. Was interesting / fascinating watching its disassembly over YouTube over the course of a year. Even got to see one of my ships disappear within 2 episodes during the kitty disassembly at the same breaker yard.

Was pretty bummed during a recent Philadelphia overnight. Went over to the navy yard and seeing the cruisers laid up there - next to Kennedy. I remember seeing the same cruisers when they were “brand new” freshly commissioned.

Now Kennedy’s gone missing from Philadelphia - off to the breakers

Mr. Crozier is about one of the humblest, most smooth person that just emits leadership out of every pore of his body you’ll ever meet.

That sentence doesn’t make any sense but I’m not rewriting it.
That was that to which I was referring, though I would happily draw a distinction between a politically-motivated relief such as his and a navigational incident such as this, too.

did you have a thought or point other than "Ahem" ? The problems with the LCS vessels were known. Similar in the sense of the Ford-class carrier (and those in different phases of construction). The USS Ford has not been the cost-saving super-carrier that many hoped. Hope they get the kinks worked out for those. It is one-bad ass machine.

It is mind boggling how the Navy keeps hitting other ships and blows through budgets on pet projects (like the LCS and Ford Class). Let us not forget Fat Leonard as well...

That said, ProPublica has a nice dive into why that keeps happening.

hah hah, it doesn't really take investigative journalism to figure out why. They could just, like, ask any of us? :)

Yeah, there are definitely more one stars than there are CVN's, the other track that keeps you competitive for flag is being selected for and completing a CAG (Carrier Air Wing Commander) tour. I'm sure there are some other means in weird corners of aviation like AEDO for promotion, but those are very small (smaller) numbers and pretty esoteric.

What dictates whether you go CAG or CVN CO? Does one have the luxury of choice or is it chosen for you?

I would imagine that speaking out against deficiencies in the chain of command is not well-received or career enhancing, perhaps even less career-enhancing than running aground, having an allision or collision?

If one is selected for major command at sea, yes, you can submit your preference, subject to needs of the navy. CVN CO has been the less popular route, I'd guess probably because it generally does not involve flying for the better part of a decade. DCAG/CAG tour is a flying tour, and is much more directly aviation related. I know in the last few years, there have been several guys who have selected the CVN (called AVN) track against their wishes, and have just retired instead. So a long way of saying, it is sort of chosen for you in some cases.

I guess it kind of depends on what kind of deficiencies we are talking about. And who the senior echelon of flag leadership is at the time. I've found the current Air Boss (the 3 star in charge of naval aviation) to be surprisingly open to people speaking up when they have a barrier to executing their mission, but that is just a snapshot in time. Obviously this is not always the case. I've had leaders before who were not willing to send hard truths up the flagpole.

That’s good. From what I can tell, though, the surface forces don’t exactly have a great safety culture at all.

The last Air Boss, btw, may well have been a distant relative of mine, though I didn’t bother to run it down.
