QX2059 Jumpseater tries to shutdown engines

I think we can all agree that mental health is something that’s been long overdue and the FAA needs an acceptable, clear, and easily spelled-out process that allows pilots to maintain their career.

Y’all delusional if you think you haven’t flown with a pilot who is (by definition) depressed. Or suffers from anxiety. They know declaring it means a long term grounding and so many pilots (IMO) don’t get the help or just outright hide it.
Adults who believe they are wholly without problems are either 1) leading exceptionally charmed lives, 2) happy imbeciles (and we have quite a few of those, in fairness) or 3) lying to themselves.

Not sure if it helps, but I may offer an idea regarding one of those: A few years ago, we were in the position of having to pay my MIL’s rent, possibly forever. Instead, we partnered with my BIL and bought her a house. That way, at the end we’d more likely have something to show for it vs just throwing money out the window…

We were EXTREMELY fortunate (timing, etc), but in the end, it turned out to be a great investment. Not sure if it would work for you, but thought I’d put it out there. Best of luck.

Sorry for the hijack.

You are spot-on, we are looking to buy her a place.

The biggest obstacle is finding a place that keeps two kids in the same schools. She lives in a nice rental townhouse in an area that’s otherwise pretty crappy. So, not so excited about buying in the area. Hoping to do something in the summer. I’m aiming for a duplex where she can manage the Air B&B on the attached unit, that could bring in $3k a month.

Interesting outlook on life.

Most of us are running scared. It doesn’t take much for life to throw you some curve balls.

We never know when we will have an interruption in employment income. On the other side of the ledger, we never know when we will face an increase in unavoidable expenses.

Here are my unplanned expenses for 2023:

- Assisted living expenses for my mother. My sister and I split $60K/year expense.

- My de facto mother in law has care of some of her grandchildren and can’t work. My SO and I cover $2k rent a month.

- My daughter is in college. $2k a month.

That’s $108k a year in relatively unplanned annual expenses. My point is, when you see somebody scrambling to maximize their income, you have no idea what they are facing. Are they fat and greedy or fat and generous, to a fault? You have no effing idea.

I would never put passengers or crew in danger, but don’t ask me to have faith in the FAA.
I "liked" your post because your second sentence it SPOT ON.

Current human reality IS, by and large, a constructed "reality" driven by fear... Based on the sale of fear schwag.

Now, it's hour come round at last, that fear is suffuse, not just in Bethlehem, but everywhere. That fear is, largely, unopposed. That fear is creating yet another religion - another rough beast.

Fear is contagious and Fear is easily transmissible because... Fear is a disease.

Like most diseases (read: dis-ease) that makes fear ripe for Snake Oil salesmen to sell to the intellectually disconstitute and the spiritually incontinent.

Recall the words of Yoda: "Fear is the path to the Dark Side. Fear leads to Anger. Anger leads to Hate. Hate leads to Suffering."

FEAR and GREED by Form810 (mentored by RF)

Some say the world will end in fear,
Some say in greed.
From how I’ve felt folks dis-cohere,
I’ll hold with those who favor fear.
Yet, if't had to perish without need,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction greed
Would also rate
And would succeed.

Not sure what to make of that alphabet soup.

Men make commitments, men are fearful they will fail to live up to their commitments. Our civilization is bound by the commitments of men. Our civilization is better for it.

Fear can be rational. My fears are rational. I do not want to live in a world of comfort. I want to continue to work hard to be a good friend, lover, son, and parent. I am fearful of my failures, everyone in my life benefits from my fear.

You categorized the motivations of men as selfish and greedy without considering their priorities or motivations. Given an opportunity, you chose to not respond to my points.

This. Only this. Disregard anything else. You obviously understand the proper place for fear to reside and become a useful force, as opposed to the forced dance of puppet-master. :)

It's an uphill battle, but I think in the long run an incident like this might actually lead to positive change.

I’m pretty pessimistic as it will have to be kabuki theater to work.

A pilot suffering from depression will have to have some well rehearsed talking points that include a fair number of lies.

I’m seeking treatment for depression for the first time. I’ve never used prescription or non-prescription drugs to self-medicate. I’ve never had any episodes of suicidal ideation. Flying brings me great joy and I never suffer from depression symptoms 24 hours prior to flying or until I leave airport property.

Prior treatment will be the minefield that turns many pilots into non-pilots.

Depression and addiction are pretty good candidates for treatment. It’s a short list what the FAA can put on the table.

Will we see generous early retirement programs like we at large police and fire departments?

And then, one day, in Widgettopia, the jokes about this event just… stopped.

So what is the backstory? Has this come out at all? We know the what, and part of the general why….:but, details! Inquiring minds want to know! :)

Source tells me ex-USAF guy

Mr. Shootie McShooter? Nothing additional. You know, there's a whole thread on that! LOL

Word is he separately has a legal case against the USG due to his refusal to receive the covid vaccine on active duty. I believe his is the case the Supreme Court just shot down. I cannot verify the authenticity of that rumor, but the names seem to be the same.

Also heard USAF guy, SLC based.
