Oh, American...

These kinds of pilots, are they breaking contractual policy? Or are they just being severely unethical and selfish? There’s no type of union censure, or similar, they can get?
Depends on the kind of dirty dealing involved. The nice thing about most scheduling systems is they’ve got great audit trails, with the precision of “this is the scheduler who built this, and this is the person who put it on their line, and this is when that happened, and this is the house they grew up in and the neighbor who told us where we could find them” and so forth.

As a contract administrator you get to be righteously upset at the Company for breaking the Agreement, and when you do catch them in the act, usually the harmed pilot gets a nice check out of the deal. Sometimes that check is the size and the shape of the scheduler’s paycheck who they were dealing dirty with, which “should” send the message to the Company too, but not always. ‘

Volunteering for flight outside the trip assignment sequence is an abrogation of the contract. Back in the day, they'd get fined by the union by operating outside the contract.
Article VIII shouldn’t just be for Admiral Moak, you’re saying.

Not saying anything. Just saying. Historical perspective.

During the bad old days, I was forced to reserve on the DC-9 with an obnoxious commute. I was home maybe 6 full days a month. So I get called out one day and I'm flying with this guy who has a really low number. So I ask if he bid reserve intentionally. He says no he's not on reserve, and lets me know that he lives next to the airport, and scheduling has his number when they need favors. I told him that not only was that not part of the contract, but hey, you know we have 675 guys and gals on furlough.

"I don't care anything about that".

This guy was youngish, fit, trim, wore a wife beater t-shirt and had a porno stache to complete the ensem. Didn't fit the typical image of a person that was wired that way. Clearly some people are going to run their program, and you're not going to change their behavior. Any attempt will make them dig in harder, and they'll actually revel in it.

It was a quiet leg.
Yikes. Sorry you had to deal with such debaucherous lunacy.

I'm not sure if you're looking for any particular kind of response to that. All I can say is that, despite all the king's horses and all the king's HR flunkies, for a whole variety of completely indefensible reasons companies often still don't do a very good job of hiring.

Meh. Just saying there are all types. While some of those types can “technically” operate safely in a crew environment, that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re not in the “you’re a very…bad person, Peter” bucket.

Got your reference. Nice.
