Trevor Jacob v2.0

Acro got it, narcissistic personality disorder. It just seems to reek of it. Camera constantly focused on their face / body, often alone, posing or just talking on endlessly.

I don’t get it. I know some make good money doing it, but still just reeks of something wrong from a narcissism point of view.

Bro, we were at our favorite little breakfast spot (attached to a garden store) at the south end of the island last weekend. These young women in front of us looked like they were from •ing outer space. Like I wanted to ask them where they came from. They were all carbon copies of the Kardashians, wearing the most bizarre platform flip flops, just insanely overdressed, with approx. 1 lb of makeup. We get a lot of tourists from Seattle, but this wasn't that, quite visibly. Anyway, the amount of pictures I watched them take of the place in line while we waited to order was absurd. I'm sure they immediately went to whatever social media feed they had. One even had a theoretical baby in a carrier, though I call it theoretical because I never saw the baby and they didn't interact with it at all, seeming more like an accessory or prop than anything else. They seemed perfectly nice, but bizarrely out of place in rural whidbey island, and also especially strange for going so apparently all-out on documenting their very average brunch accommodations (I'll give them that it is a "cute" place and the food is exceptional). To be fair, they also had a friend that had a thick eastern euro accent, and they looked probably Armenian, so in their defense, they were probably from a different culture.

I think CC is implying that influencers are suffering from narcissistic personality disorder. That said, I think they're suffering from the same "get rich quick" mentality that drives most of the scammers and scammed in this country, and that's wholeheartedly endorsed as a way to get in to the "winning side," the "big league," etc.

In my opinion, it's a symptom of the collision of barely-regulated end-stage capitalism, the concept of unlimited caveat emptor, and prosperity doctrine. (And "celebrity")
It's not that deep for everyone. Some of us tried to do things the normal way, but it was a disaster, so we need to take what makes us unsuccessful in a professional environment and use it to get ahead. I'm trying to become an aviation influencer now (like the Happy Gilmore kind), but before that, I tried to be an air traffic controller, an airline manager, get into airport ops, go to college, etc. Had my work in those fields (as in the team I put together in SMF not only saved the contract but is still in place today, for example) excused my loud and ostentatious personality or a global pandemic not occurred, music and comedy is as deep as I was going to dive into that world. Now, I see it as a means to an end.

All I'm saying is not everyone in that world just wanted to "get rich quick" in lieu of working, some of them I'm sure were cast aside just like I was but were lucky enough to be entertaining, or at least attractive. We don't all just have an "off switch", some of us are just "us" all the time. Extroverted high-energy people are people too, but we don't fit in everywhere. Maybe most places. Lol. But you know where we do fit in? Social media. By the grace of Allah.

I get that.

Seriously. Most normal people would have been out there playing poker and smoking cigars at the regionals and I was making a website.
Little did you know that you were laying the foundation for putting a Gulley in an A330, back when his liver was still fully functional.

Was out in Carlsbad a couple of weeks ago at a resort for a conference. The wife and I are sitting on the patio of Bob’s Steakhouse (yum, love that place), and we watched two “influencers“ (aka, worthless wastes of human flesh) spend literally 15 minutes filming each other repeatedly walking away from Bob’s while spinning and posing to get the “perfect shot.” Then they spent another 15 minutes doing the same nonsense in front of the fountain.

These people are garbage, and their parents should be ashamed for what they raised.

You know, there used to be a time when people understood that you couldn’t just act whatever way you want all the time, and if you want to be successful in a professional environment you sometimes have to adapt to fit it.

I mean... no more garbage than property managers. :)

But for real... they probably make more money than you do, and as long as they aren't using public resources because they aren't making any money, why do you care?

The percentage of people who try to be “influencers” who are actually making any decent money off of it is minuscule. But regardless, being a worthless human who contributes nothing of value to society is not something to aspire to, even if it makes bank.

I'm sure you already know this, but sometimes a reminder is in order: You have a judgemental • streak in you.

I don’t take that as an insult, despite how it may be intended. We’ve become far too permissive in our society about how people behave, and I’m happy to be someone who calls out garbage behavior.
Intentions which drive actions are important to me. It was not my intention to insult you, but to shine a small light on that particular behavior, with the minimal hope of affecting it positively (by my definition of "positive" of course). And I did it with awareness that it could be taken as an insult since it certainly wasn't presented in a way to uplift you, and I was/am ok with that as an unintended side effect, but I did not write it with the primary intention of being insulting to you.

Cool. :) We’ll just disagree on this one, as we do many things.

I know. Can you imagine? Good timing on my dad's part.

Doesn't seem like it. You aren't exactly an influencer success story yet. I'd say his timing sucked. You're well into your 30s and now viewing a severe long shot as your best path forward. Seems like you would have been far better served to modify your behavior 20 years ago and you'd probably be making six figures today.

Trevor Jacob has had a lot of concussions throughout his life. He’s probably got CTE.

LOL I'm only 32 (which is like 25 in the Bay Area) and I've literally just bought my LLC today (funny story, basically hijacked it from the previous owner. Arrrrgh). I haven't been trying to do THAT, so it hasn't really started. But the thing is, I'm cool with a lot of the big aviation influencers and they've been doing podcasts with me lol.

I've never been motivated by money up until this point, which isn't great but is my reality. Flying isn't about the money to me, at least not as WHY I want to do it. I wanted to do it when I thought I'd be an RJ F/O starting at $29k and waiting a decade to upgrade. Even this isn't about the money, it's about the experiences, be they friends, photo ops, travel, etc. Besides, most dudes who know as much as I do about this stuff are incels. I've had a damn near 90% success rate befriending the few aviation influencers I thought were hot lol. And I'm not going to stop flying and making money in sustainable ways, it is just something I want to do and maintain and link to other things I do.

And unlike most, I have hours and hours of hilarious radio recordings and videos from the last decade. Most of it I can actually share and not get in trouble. Most of the ATC tapes popular on YouTube are cheeky at best. I stand behind anything I'm going to do as hilarious. So between that and the contacts I have already, it should actually be easier for me than not telling management to pound sand...as management.

Everyone is super negative about aviation mostly, we all know it's true. Say what you will about me, despite what happened to me up until this point and how long it's taken me to get there having financial problems my whole life, I'm still all about it. Don't you want more people like that with a voice?
