CDOs/Standups

SkyWest was as of 2019, I'm 99% they still are. Some of them weren't as terrible, short legs with almost 8 hours on the ground, which always made me kind of chuckle. "It's just like the old layovers but this loophole makes it legal again!" Some of them were miserable. 2 hour flights on each side with something like 4 hours in the hotel.

not sure whos doing them currently as theyre kind of a waste of duty time given the shortage but we did them post 117 at my regional, I bid them as lines fairly frequently as a junior FO

Funny you mention this, I just saw a trip trade today at my regional where a pilot was trying to dump one. I was surprised because there weren't any in the bid packet for my base this month, but Avoiding those is pretty high in my bid parameters.

I guess we still have them, but they're not as common as they used to be.

Yes.....BlueJet (I think) still does pairings from JFK down to STI or SDQ and back......You depart late 11pm or later....fly the 3.5 hrs down.....hour on the ground and fly back...land in the morning. Doesn't pay 10hrs despite being 2 days (single duty period). Some guys can stomach them, most of us fly a handful as junior guys and stay far away after that.

Not at our shop but there are these atrocious two leg redeye turns:

They're not allowed at my company. But you can end up on one during irregular operations under certain circumstances and if you agree to it.

Some of us want them because "BrandX/Old Days/Whatever" but I'm glad we don't… And they probably wouldn't fly them anyway so some poor reserve gets stuck with it.

We do a bunch of the overnight 2 leggers to some of the south pacific islands, but they are augmented (some with a four man crew) so they aren't too bad. Seems like other than the regionals, nobody is doing traditional CDOs.

Akkkkkshuuuuulllllyyyyy….every once in a while scheduling will cobble together some turd sandwich along the lines of the last ANC-FAI, sit there for 5 hours, then the first flight back to ANC in the morning. I’ve never seen it in the bid pack that way, but they’ll do it to cover stuff sometimes. Still better than those red eye turns you posted though.

Endeavor stopped them in 2019 or so. Mama Delta didn’t want to comply with the FAA rules, so they shut it down. I didn’t mind them as a commuter and night owl.

We continued to do them at AirTran after part 117, but as @ZapBrannigan mentioned, that all came to an end as the Southwest merger progressed, because their software was incapable of scheduling them.

They always went super senior for us. I was top 25% in seat, and I struggled to hold them some months. My years flying CDOs were the best of my career. Flying with the same small group of pilots and FAs who always bid them, home every single day, flying only about 200 hours a year. It was fantastic. A part time job that paid a full time salary and every day at home.

Flying a CDO from ATL to RDU is completely different than doing JFK-Santiago DR. Bermuda Triangle for starters. ;-)

I love our trips that go

LAS-ATL 0058-0600

ATL-PHX 2100-0000
PHX-ATL 0100-0600

ATL-LAS 2100-2330
I’m senior enough to avoid this garbage but I suspect that with more planes they’ll schedule more of these and I don’t want any of it. So, I’m, uh, doing stuff.

The problem I saw with people doing them regularly was they’d do the crap CDOs with 4-5 hours rest, and that was it for them for 24 hours. They’d get home and go to another job or take the kids or whatever.

By about day 3 they were worthless.
