Next Up in the RLA Conga Line

Bad strategy. I’ve played that game before, and SWAPA used it against us. We settled for rates far below what we were targeting in order to get the CBA done so we could focus on SLI and a JCBA, but then SWAPA came to the SLI table and claimed our new rates were proof that we were an “inferior” carrier based on our lower pay rates that we just agreed to. Don’t make that mistake.

That's some good opinion, there with all of your time doing union stuff!

I mean, he is right that the NMB views airlines in “tiers,” and they’ll never let a Spirit or Frontier fight to the end for Delta rates.

But here’s the part he won’t like: the NMB doesn’t view Alaska as being a legacy tier carrier, either. So you expecting Alaska rates is not crazy.

Another really good opinion.

It was mostly United. They'd been in negotiations for a while, and in late summer of 2000 the CEO walked in (per the first hand story I heard) without telling any of the labor relations team, and offered to sign the current deal on the table as is, if United ALPA would support his attempt to close out the merger with USAir. The rates were (at the time) astronomical. It forced Delta to sign a deal (about 6 months later) that was also pretty sizable.

Of course 9-11 pretty much killed any gains made.

Correct.

Leo Mullin basically said "You can have all you want!" because he really didn't give a poop about the continued viability of the company.

There was wine.

There was cheese.

There were meats on boards.

9/11 happened and the weird new reality struck.

The United merger was turned down by the DOJ before 9/11.

It was an audacious trick that Stephen Wolf was trying to pull off. Since there was significant overlap between United's IAD operation and US Airways DCA hub, Wolf was going to spin the entire DC market into a third airline called DC Air that would be run by Bob Johnson, the CEO of BET. Wolf was DARING the DOJ to kill the deal that would have created the first African American run airline in the US.

He started a Dash 8 operator in ROA called MidAtlantic. If the merger was approved MDA's certificate would become DC Air's. They eventually became their own B-scale operation, flying the E190s for USAir for several years.

This one is an easy no vote for me. Disappointed we didn’t even get Alaska rates, but the big No for me was the fact that (if it passes) they can unilaterally raise first year pay without raising the rest. That’s a hard NO for me. Let’s be honest the only reason they are even at the table is because of first year pay, if that leverage goes away……

Ask a Frontier pilot how giving away the farm on first year pay is going.

JetBlue got something, apparently.
Pretty awesome that NK peeps should be able to see Jet blues offer before we get to vote on ours. I have a feeling NK’s deal will be going from possible pass to definite no when the details come out. People can have their opinions about comparing NK’s offer to the new Delta offer but to accept less than JB as you are in the process of merging with them would be ridiculous. Much thanks to the JB MEC for reaching a TA when they did.

Question from an idiot : people love to say that the union will shove a garbage contract down our throats just to get a deal done but how does getting a crap TA to pass benefit them? When a TA comes out every look at the negotiating committee as if they’re on managements side and I don’t understand why.

[Eskimo forum] - Looks like he took his ball and went home. What a sensitive dude

Looks like it’s open for posts again. Super crazy topic… and stuff.

Be interesting to see how the JB TA news is received. So I’m glad they are done with read only for now.

At the end of the day (under ALPA at least), all contracts get voted on by the membership. If something gets voted in, the majority of the membership thought it was the right deal for them. You can't brag about being super financially savvy and then at the same time complain that the MEC pulled the wool over your eyes and made you vote a certain way. The NC (and more recently the MEC reps) have been taking the heat because pilots need somebody to blame for things not going the way they envisioned them, even if they ended up voting yes.

So 6 pilots out of 3,000 (an astonishing .2% of the population) had debilitating results after the vaccine and lost their medical *because* of the Covid vaccine shot?

Am I really suppose to believe that? There’s that whole correlation and causation thing…
