New Alaska TA

I flew with one a couple weeks ago. Think he said he lived in Encinitas. Your friend looking for a friend?

yeah it’s the oddest thing, his cargo outfit isn’t panning out like he hoped it would. So he’s mulling the idea of laterally moving freight operators or going somewhere like Alaska or Southwest if he’s lucky enough to get an interview. He has some personal reasons to stay in San Diego and just like me, had a bad experience commuting in the past. I think that’s why we get along so well… :D

An angry 18% guy. Yawn.

I want the 121 airline I’ve chosen to hang my hat at to succeed. I’d like to see it grow so there are opportunities for everyone. That isn’t happening with 277 apps on file. Call me what you want but we need to attract pilots to this airline and our latest contract isn’t going to make that happen.

If you’re labor it’s seller’s market.

How did we get here?

How do we fix it?

The number was given out on the base CP call

I think the company will have a SAN base in the next few years, but I wouldn't make big life choices until it actually happened.

Don't believe anything a chief pilot says, good or bad.

I feel like you’re quoting me about management. I just don’t see any reason for them to lie about it…

They aren’t looped in on strategic decisions. They’re just day to day people managers. The average union rep knows more about what’s going on than they do. Maybe they’re just clueless? Look at the personality type that wants to climb the ladder.

Pilot attrition and retention = not your problem. They will figure something out.

They just instituted a 1000 hr turbine requirement. Apparently several people wash out in training. AQP training where they will literally repeat over and over again, hold your hand, etc.

Sorry, but that’s scary. The 1000 turbine requirement was apparently instituted after these kinds of people washed out. If they are instituting that kind of requirement, they must know what the pool looks like and how much harder it would be to get applicants. They want to hire 600 next year.

Nothing stops them from coming to the union to negotiate a LOA for more stuff (eg, higher 1st yr pay, bonuses, etc.). The union can leverage that for additional gains elsewhere.

Longer term solution? I get crap for it but it’s gonna be MPL / 1500 hr rule goes poof. My guess within this decade. There’s just too much demand for pilots and not enough supply. I’m fully expecting to fly with newhires in a 737 with 250 hrs at some point down the road.

The ATP requirement was going away last I heard. I've not yet heard anything about 1000 turbine. That's really going to limit the number of potential applicants.
