I think it was you (or maybe another FO, but fairly certain it was you) on the other forum writing about CAs just don’t seem to be interested in hanging out and doing stuff on overnights with the rest of the crew. Well after that JL email from a few years back, I can understand why. Do you remember that email? The one where it said, “CAs, we are going to hold you to a higher standard regarding overnights…” (in terms of crew related hanging out/activities and ANYTHING going wrong).

To be fair, I seem to remember that ours calls it the "737G" which also makes no sense to me

@Cherokee_Cruiser I get all the stuff you are saying, and I also can use some quiet away from the kids time (ours are young too).....just saying folks shouldn't be arbitrarily paranoid, but then again, I haven't seen all those types of anecdotes yet. I will say that if I were ever a CA planning to take a bunch of FA's out to dinner, I would be damn sure my FO was there with me. Taking everyone out to dinner also gets very expensive over time, so I get the reluctance to do that as well. My only true experience going out as a crew was on OE in the islands, on a long layover, and it was basically just a happy hour drink at the hotel. CA and I peeled away after that and got dinner.

Are captains expected to pay for the entire crew, should they decide to go out?

Other guys can answer this better than I can, but that has been a complaint I have heard from a few CAs. I'm sure like other humans, some enjoy throwing cash around more than others. I definitely haven't been allowed to buy my dinner with a CA on an overnight though, even though I tried. That may well be a probie/year 1 FO thing, more than a general rule though.

No.

Maybe this was true 40 years ago. (I know a retired, now passed away, AA Capt who would not let me or my spouse pay for anything because of that outdated tradition… he also had a fully funded retirement, a pension, and he offered/I tried to refuse/he insisted.)

We are all adults on the overnight and you should order accordingly. If I ever get the ‘glare’ from the crew, especially if I’m not offering something - like a round of appetizers or something, well… they aren’t my spouse… I hope they brought cash, card, or like to wash dishes.

It’s different when having a dinner with a new FO or such. Or if I’m on my shop’s version of a ‘green slip.’ But those are special circumstances.

lol….BluePilots rarely see crew on layovers. It’s been years for me. Like maybe if we broke down somewhere we don’t typically layover.

Maybe a year 1 thing. I wouldn’t expect a rsv CA to buy dinner for an FO who is making more than he is for instance. ( not that uncommon).

It is 73G for next-Generation and 734 for the -400 when that was around.


Covid just made all this easiest. Now it’s almost expected you’re doing your own thing :)

I second that. Looking back at the names in my logbook, so many of the pilots I was flying with last spring were riding the 200% train.

And, yeah, overnights with the Azul crews are rare creatures. And I do almost exclusively red eyes, so the majority of the hotel brief is ‘AIV is 18:30, sleep well.’

Personally, I'd never expect a CA to buy my dinner or anything else. But that is a good example of why it shouldn't be an expectation.
