I'm curious, would you rather have your hours cut short term (2-3 months) but have your job long term, or have your full hours short term and end up furloughed in 6 months? Personally speaking I'd rather go through a short period of suck if it means I still have my job and seniority in a year from now, versus looking for a new job or in a new job at the bottom of the seniority list, but that's just me. I'm genuinely curious how you view that situation.
this isn’t going to be a 2-3 month deal, bud.
taking a pay cut now won’t stop furloughs
to be fair a union won’t stop furloughs either, but they do provide order and best possible outcome for employees (if the union is functioning properly.
All airlines will likely have to furlough from this maybe with the exception of our cargo friends.
Taking a partial hourly cut, partial pay cut, time off without pay, time off with very little pay are all good ways to prolong the inevitable but at the end of the day this is a major disruption and cannot just *poof* go away and all our jobs be saved.
It is unfortunate, we will triumph in the long run, and most of us will get our jobs back *at some point* ...but taking a partial cut now will not save you from furlough. So yeah, I’m glad I’m part of a union and yeah I’ll take my full pay now and save unemployment for when I really need it (it is a limited amount of time/money after all)
You do what works for you, and I’ll do what works for me
**standard disclaimer** if I am wrong about this as I said before, I’ll be very glad. And I’ll welcome all the “I told you so’s” from the overly optimistic group
