2020 DX Outlook With Coronavirus

I think once the media has something else to move onto, we’ll see a pretty quick recovery, but right now this is getting ratings, which keeps the advertisers happy, and it’s a vicious cycle. Fear sells.

I’m curious to see if people feel the same about cargo airlines. If this really does cause companies to develop the ability to telecommute, and the bean counters see the cost savings, that could only mean good things for cargo since people will have to ship more instead of bringing with them. Granted the same thing was said the last time the economy took a nice steamy dump.
I used to read a blogger online who used to be in the media biz. In one of his posts, he said that the media have a saying that encapsulates what you say: if it bleeds, it leads; if it burns, it earns. Sums up the media mentality...

Yes this is the beginning of the long anticipated economic downturn but add on top of that the fear to fly. This is going to be severely worse than 2008.
Even if the hysteria only lasts 2 more months that is long enough to bankrupt every airline besides DL and WN. 2 months of empty planes is catastrophic.
As a member of the flying public, I'm not worried about catching this virus on an airplane. In fact, I think it's just a big scare; I think it's overblown. That's another discussion though. What concerns me and is keeping me on the ground is this: not being able to get back home! That's what worries me, so until this plays out, I'm not taking any trips. If I have to be stuck anywhere, I'd rather it be at home. I dare say many out there feel the same way...

What do you think the likelihood is of a full flying stoppage? If all these states and cities are banning gatherings of large numbers of people, how does it make sense to keep airports open? I fully believe we’ll see it in the next few days, hope I’m wrong obviously but I’m starting to think it’s inevitable...
During his presser earlier today, POTUS was asked about possible reductions in domestic flights. He said that it was on the table, and that he wouldn't rule it out.

Hearing a regional is issuing laptops and such to their SOC personnel in case they have to dispatch from home.

Not like that can be legally done at this point, but sure, waste your money.
How could that be done? Even during my brief time on the desk, there are plenty of reasons you need to confer with MX, crew scheduling, or a sup about your flights. For example, if you have to verify removal or addition of an MEL, that necessitates talking to MX Control. I don't see HOW DXing could be done from home...

VPN, Laptop, cellphone, and breathalyzer keyboard interlock

I've worked for 2 different airlines who went through moving offices. All that is stuff that can be done over the phone. The big issue is that dispatchers can't work from home cuz you have to be in a secure location. Everyone else could work from home, that would at least cut down on infection possibilities.

I'm planning to do it tomorrow. Perhaps not surprisingly, all the flights look wide open.

Most of the nonrev groups I'm in are quiet as mice:

"Hi [airline]! What do the loads from HNL to [wherever] look like on [3 days away]...thanks!"

Replies averaging "Just go, you'll be treated like royalty," to GIFs of laughter.

I’m more worried that the stores will be out of TP when I run out

I think if this subsided over the next month or so we could see things returning close to normal by the summer. Italy/Asia may take longer to recover but with schools closing, sporting events stopping, and people working from home where able it’ll recover sooner than people think.

Also might have a lot more sports charters than normal with NBA/NHL potentially.

I strongly suspect the same. This is going to be the most catastrophic event in the airline industry’s history, which is saying A LOT.

European airlines are operating what are essentially ferry flights to their international destinations to maintain their slots. Chinese airlines can’t sell tickets for $3. The CDC is now telling everyone to not fly. I don’t think any of us can really imagine what is about to go down.
Sounds like a helluva good time to travel the world.

This thing is likely going to infect half the global population. Bbmikej can google all he wants but fact is all age groups aside from 9-0 have seen severe cases and deaths. If they don’t flatten the curve then we will have too many severe cases (of all age groups -9-0) that will require ventilation/ICU and not enough ventilators. That is what will drive up the deaths he most. And think about all of the lifelong lung problems later from this. COPD, Asthma, possible lung cancer types, ect. If you think because you’re young with a great immune system you are safe then good luck to you. I’m young with a great immune system and I’m going to do everything I can to avoid it.

It’s pandemic now. The next phase is endemic. That’s the state in which everyone is exposed or potentially exposed.
As I tried to point out weeks ago, there’s no hiding. We now live with it within the human species. We are the host now. There’s no way, short of effective universally distributed vaccine, to rid ourselves of this.
As a species, we’ve demonstrated the intelligence, capacity, and will to drive viruses out of the population through vaccination. But that occurred in a different era. These days?? Good effing luck, neo-post-monkeys!
Viruses don’t give an ass about any individual’s politics, magical thinking, net worth, gender, race, socio-economic strata, brand of vehicle, club affiliation, or choice of shirt.
They are little pieces of information that require a host in order to replicate. They can not replicate without a host. They end only when denied a host... one way, or another. We humans ARE smart enough to give ourselves a choice in that evolution. Whether or not we can get our shirt together and make rational decisions to selected the preferred choice... that remains to be seen.
