When I worked at Polar I jumpsat with one of the main LCF captains on a NRT-ANC flight (non-LCF). Seriously one of my favorite captains ever, awesome guy. I watched him hand fly in IFR all the way up to cruise altitude going up the NOPACS, and I’m not exaggerating when I say we were assigned no less than 6 altitudes on climb out (level off, manually set thrust, fly, start climb) It took abnormally long, I respect that kind of old school piloting immensely.
I asked him as a LCF pilot how much different did it fly? His response was that it’s quite similar and not really much different than other 747s, kind of like the difference from a 400 and a -8F.
