ACARS etiquette and you

Never sent an ACARS as a DX as Silver didn’t (and still doesn’t?) have it in the Saabs.

We (Ops) can send ACARS while the plane is at the gate but we can’t receive which is too bad sometimes because it would cut down on radio traffic.
 
I keep my messages to dispatch bland. Without the ability to use exclamation points, question marks or other common punctuation, I can sound like a • with catlike quickness.
I notice you didn't use any exclamation points in this!

When I ask questions I rock a .Q. "....." .Q. it's like acars spanish.

The most extreme example I saw of it was when said dispatcher pulled a flight off someone else's desk, while the flight was enroute, without telling the dispatcher whose desk it was on. If I recall correctly the dispatcher had been in the middle of discussing weather at the destination with the PIC or something else that was flight safety specific. That was a fun get your popcorn situation when the dispatcher blew up at her.
Hmm. Sounds like an Atlanta regional carrier...
 
A confused Captain is a happy Captain...?

I don’t know, but I do know when appropriate I ACARS things blaming the FO(s). I have never gotten a negative response. Last time it was a request for B044 Redispatch 3 hours from the RDP, I questioned “who let the FO play with the ACARS?” And kindly reminded them they needed to wait.

Do they not show up on your boxes? They show up on ours but only half of the boxes in the cockpit have the ability to send them back.

You also have the reverse of that...had a B044 and we were 50 miles from the redispatch point before we received our R/R. It was 2 of us FO's up front, and we kept messaging the dispatcher.

Our last message was if we don't hear from you by our point, we're going to end up in London instead of Germany. He/she (not sure who it was) finally sends us our R/R. The captain had come up already after his break as we finally received our info. Needless to say, her had words with the dispatcher afterwards.

In the Airbus, we don’t have the touch screens so the only characters we have available are the ones that are on the MCDU (FMS) keypad.

You guys just need to get that ACARS update to ping your dispatcher. I think it’s in one of your recent bulletins.
 
I like the term "Loose but professional"
Addressing them with "Hey Captain/skipper/Cap" and then "showing WX crossing planned route in approx 200 miles (at point xyz) recommend deviating to points ABC, Then DEF, then as filed"... Now if it's Saturday evening, and they're one of 2 aircraft I have up and it's just clear and a billion they might get a joke acars or something to keep the mood light. (I'm a big fan of the George Carlin "Hippy Dippy Weatherman" brief where I tell them the forecast for this evening is Dark with continued dark through the night, turning partly light by the morning)
