Thinking About Sun Country?

The "Compensation Package" blurb is the same bait and switch that Johnny O used when I started at Mesa.

Let's compare 3rd yr Mesa Capt to 3rd year 'everyone else' FO because that upgrade is guar-ant-eed!

Many things factor into whether or not to accept a position... and not commuting is a huge deal. Just make sure that you weigh everything accordingly.

Then why does anyone show up to [insert chosen regional here]?

You’re comparing apples to oranges. No one is disputing that the regionals have traditionally paid sub-industry standard wages. But the airlines also know that young pilots have to find a way build experience and become competitive to apply to better places to make a career. Someone with the experience applicable to Sun Country can work towards applying and working somewhere else with higher wages and a better contract just the same. I’m not knocking sun country. They’re a great pilot group and I know many who want nothing more than to make their career there.

You're assuming that everyone will get a shot at a legacy carrier. There are a large number of guys out there who will never get a job better than sun country through no fault of their own.

To hear some Sun Country pilots tell it, it’s only a matter of time before Delta buys them. DOH merger, and career set!

Realisitically, is anyone going to actually consider this a career airline? Or would someone simply use this as a resume polish for the bigs?
From what I've heard you're better off building PIC time at your regional than jumping ship numerous times to say you flew this type and this type. Just the advice I've been given numerous times, not saying it's right or wrong. I have no idea what the legacies truthfully want. I've considered a lot of options as being young/single to explore the world, make more than a regional, and fly something bigger but nearly everyone gives me advice to just upgrade at my regional.

I do get why people think of certain airlines as stepping stones. For me personally based on the history of the industry, the ups and downs, I'd like to call my next shop my career airline. I feel like it's risky to bounce around and be at the bottom in case of a furlough, economy downtown, etc. I'm sure some will disagree with the logic, didn't mean to derail about myself but that's just how I take it when putting my apps out.

Was once a great option to certain cities from MSP. They have changed their mode of operation to more of a budget (Spirit) operation. Wont use them again. Their fiasco this past winter where they left pax stranded in Mexico is enough to say no more.

Sorta unrelated, but Sun Country was started by ex-Braniff employees who were based in MSP.

I say unrelated because that's a long way from where they are now. There was a peaceful coexistence with Northernjets back in the day.

I mean let’s be honest here. 3rd year CAs at Endeavor can earn more and have better quality of life.
Work for a place where the (big) name on the jet (not the little subtitles near 1L) matches the name on the paycheck.

Better than a regional. Right?
If it works for you, it works for you. My regional worked for me. Although, I'm glad I don't work there anymore.

I flew with a lot of people who headed to SCY here in MSP. Hiring a lot of FOs it seems. So yeah, it's obviously better than being a Canadair copilot at Tabernacle Air.

I know someone who married a nice girl from Duluth who is seriously considering staying; they own a house in Eagan and are generally pretty darned happy up this way. If you live in Minneapolis, have no intention of leaving, and do not want to commute, then it's about as good as you can get (in before Delta - Don't Ever Leave The Airbus).

Am loathe to toss stones concerning career choices because (1) mine has been a messy set of evolutions and (2) he's happy, which is what we SHOULD be caring about. I think I've met exactly one commuter to SCY, who was a frequent rider of my jumpseat, but if you're a local, meh.

Boy isn't that the pinch. Some say marinating at your regional, upgrading on a jet you already have thousands of hours on, is not desirable. Some say get the PIC and hang in there. Thing is, how many RJ captains are out there trying to move up.....just another RJ guy.

I dont mind my life here at Air Moroni but I sure dont want to bet my career on it. Make the check match the paint seems a reasonable interim goal.

There really is no way to know-it's a crazy business.

Those who know, aren't talking.
